Killer Heat... another death. We're trying to organize some help.

The high today is forecast to be 106 degrees… We now have a report of a sixth heat death in Memphis and this time it is not an elderly person.  The man was 32 years old and living in an apartment without air conditioning.  Somehow he wandered out into the front yard and that’s where people found him collapsed on the ground.

Obviously there is a desperate need for fans.  Volunteers for the Commission on Aging are out on the streets right now delivering donated fans to the elderly who need them… shut-ins… people without transportation… or simply can’t afford them.

I know there are a lot of people who want to help and we are trying right not to organize a fan drive for tonight’s newscasts.  Its not done yet, but we have people working on it.  We’re going to try to find a central location where it’ll be easy for people to drop of a box fan.

These things don’t cost very much… as little as ten dollars, usually no more than 18.

That’s not much to help save a person’s life.   We’re working on details right now.

In the meantime, if you want to know how to do something yourself, here's the info:

The fans generally cost anywehre between $12-to-$18 each.

The Aging Commission of the Mid-South needs donations. They prefer you donate a 20” box fan, but they will also take cash. If you would like to donate a fan, call (901) 452-0340. They are also looking for volunteers to deliver the fans. To qualify for a free fan you must be 65 or older or an adult with a disability.

Keep watching here and on the television and I’ll let you know the details ASAP

WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN !!!
In this heatwave our children in Memphis city, Shelby and Desoto Counties are suffering. The buses are like tin cans and they are killing our kids. Now if these "Mayors" really care about them they would stop spending money on unnessesary things and PUT AIR CONDITIONING ON THE BUSES!!
Don't let one of our children pay the price before action is taken !!

By the time someone gets around to air conditioning the buses, it could be Winter or Spring.  First they (politicians, board members, etc.) have to discuss it, then they have to find the money, then they have to vote on it, then if it passes, it will take time to get it done.

Until that day comes, if it ever does, I would suggest giving each kid a cold bottle of water as they get on the bus heading home.  And while you might think they aren't going to be on the bus that long, you really never know.  How often have you heard of a bus breaking down & the kids sitting there waiting for an hour or two before another one shows up?  Some folks might argue this too costly, but not me.  How much is a life worth?

I have sent several emails,  to you,  to Eyewitness News,  to the Tn Dept of Corrections,  concerning the inmates at Mark Luttrell Correctional Center there in Memphis and the conditions under which they must live.  I keep watching the news hoping to see something...anything...mentioned about those poor women that are living in an unairconditioned prison.   I see nothing.  Nothing on the news,  no response to emails voicing my concerns....nothing.   The news reports that it is important to stay out of this heat and get to a cool place.   There are fans being donated to the elderly.   We seem to be concerned about everyone except the women at MLCC.   Is that because they are convicted felons?   Do we lock them away and just forget about them?    When it is 105 degrees outside it is 115 degrees in the housing units at MLCC.   For most of those women there is no escape from the heat.   Some have fans, yes, but most do not.   Has anyone tried to get fan donations for them?  The warden at MLCC,  Dwayne Barbee,  tells me no.  When are the living conditions at that women's prison news worthy?  When the inmates start dying inside from the heat?   Not that any of us out here would ever know about it because nobody seems to care enough to inquire.   I think it is very sad that so many people feel those that are incarcerated "deserve what they get" regardless of what that might mean.

Have they gone to prison or a country club?

"If you can't do the time, don't do the crime."  Yes, that sounds pretty hard-nosed, doesn't it?  But isn't it really the truth?  If prison is a happy place, then what reason is there not to go back?  Think about it.

To jdavis1957......It is people with your attitude that are part of the problem, not part of the solution.   Prison is far from being a "country club".   Nobody said those women should not be incarcerated.  They did their crimes and they are doing their time,  however,   does that mean we should lock them away and not care how they are being treated inside those prison walls?   To quote your own blog comment: "HOW MUCH IS A LIFE WORTH?"   Did you mean any life or just the ones you feel are of value?   Convicted felons or not,  those women are human beings and should be treated as such.
