Teens caught passing out racist notes

Today, reporter Alexis Amorose uncovers a racially charged situation in Senatobia, Mississippi.  Two students passed out notes making jokes about black people.  One "joke" reads:  Why did so many n*** die in Vietnam? When they was told to get down they started break dancing... you know, like we're just ignorant, we're just stupid.

The students were suspended for three days.  But, many people in the community feel the punishment does not fit the crime.  They are calling for more time.  Are these jokes simply "jokes" or do they imply a deeper hatred?  Are these kids mimmicking what they hear at home?  Is this merely childs play?  Personally, I think it's cruel.  My father, and my uncles, served in Vietnam.  They sacrificed their lives for this country.  Many African Americans were forced to fight, then forced to serve in segregated units because they were seen as sub-standard.  Is this what they deserve?  Despite their environments and lack of resources, many African Americans have worked long and hard to make a difference.  Is this what they deserve.  But, on the other hand, it's not what you are called; rather, it's what you answer to.  What do you think?    Here's another "joke" in the letter: What does the NAACP stand for? N*** around America causing problems.

Dee,

I saw the segment about the racial jokes that went around at the school I graduated from.  It shocked me.   When I went there, racial tensions were pretty relaxed.  We were all friends.  What do you expect from a class of 90+?  I think it has a lot to do with maturity and how you are brought up as a child.  I can tell you from experience,  I think that the maturity level with kids these days is decreasing each year.  I know my class knew that racism had no place in school.  The majority of us were brought up with that in mind.  I'm glad these kids got punished for their actions, but I agree.  3 days suspension is just a short vacation from school for them.

I don't think, as a whole, that racial tensions are as tight as Ms Walker described.  I believe it is contained to one or two small groups of students.  Senatobia is a great school in a great town.  I hope that Alexis's news segment didn't tarnish what people think about this school.

You know this is getting blown up more than it should be!!! I have 2 kids at SHS and SJH and they have talked about all this to me every day since it happened. And what I am hearing from 2 that are there everyday and KNOW what is going on in their school is that NONE of the kids seem to have a problem much with this now, it is the PARENTS and MEDIA that are keeping things stirred up. NO, what those boys did was not right and they should have been punished and I dont agree that 3 days to sit at home and do nothing was enough but I do agree that  parents and media need to stay out of this UNLESS it gets out of hand with the kids, then by all means the parents need to step in. I feel it really sad that the media has to KEEP racial tensions stirred up, especially where innocent kids are at risk to get hurt. And Yes I do know what is going on because my children are around some of the ones involved everyday, and I was told that just today ( Tuesday) one of the guys that passed around the jokes was sitting among a group of  African American students and they were all laughing and cutting up TOGETHER. So you see it IS NOT THE KIDS!!!! Media if you want to report on SHS, how about reporting about what a GREAT school it is and how high they score in Academics, Sports, Band etc.... Let SHS be known for what GOOD they do and leave the racial things alone because they only cause problems and make things ALOT worse for everyone.
I am proud to say that my kids go to Senatobia High School...
And to the above poster, Her segment is just one of many in the area and yes they are tarnishing what people in the area think of the school....

As much as I don't particularly care for the joke, I don't think people should over react.  Yes I am black by the way.  We make jokes about white people all the time, not necessarily the right think to do, but not harmful.  I do think an assessment needs to be done, to make sure we don't have some junior KKK's growing up trying to make their bones when they get grown, then you find some of us hanging from a tree.  Let's nip things in the bud before they grow into something disastrous.
