Memphis Tigers

Fear The Tiger

So my man Bootsy Collins put out a song titled, “Fear the Tiger,” as a tribute to the great season the Tigers are having. They have caused me quite a scare. For example, that game against UAB in Birmingham, down seven with less than a minute to play was not good for my heart, nor was the close call at home against UTEP, or the overtime game with USC, or the lone loss to Tennessee. So I’m in fear every time the game is close.

I did experience similar fear on my flight from Little Rock to Dallas before connecting to San Antonio. I’m a calm cool person and anyone who knows me, knows this is true. My hands are as steady as they come. But that ride Thursday was frightful. I couldn’t believe the amount of turbulence, not to mention our pilot believed he was Jeff Gordon. We left late so I guess he was trying to make up the time. Meanwhile, I’m clutching on the seat in front of me.

As irony would have it, my worst flight ever was flying with the Tigers’ team two years ago on the way to Providence, Rhode Island. The weather in Providence was horrible that day and there was ice and snow everywhere. The ride was very indicative of the weather.

Then, while in the air, the weather started getting rough, the tiny plane was rocked, if not for… (If you watched Gilligan's Island you know the rest). Anyhow, we all know Joey Dorsey is a big, strong, tough guy, but he didn’t look that way when the plane dipped that night. Dorsey, like members of the rest of the team, was in a deep sleep until he felt the jerk of the plane. Dorsey jumped up and almost ripped his seatbelt off. I can’t repeat what he yelled, and of course I was just as terrified.

After their game against UCLA, Tigers' guard Chris Douglas-Roberts walked off the court and said that no one wanted the Tigers right now. So yes, fear the tiger, but also fear the plane ride.

I would like to congratulate the tigers for a great season as well. They don't really realize how they have brought the people together. So for this I give thanks. True, a win would have been great, but they closeness and oneness of Memphians was worth it all. We love yall, so continue to rejoice and smile. I look forward to another season!

To lose the game is one thing.

To lose it because of one sided officiating is another.

They allowed a slap fest for Kansas in the first half.  If we even had incidental contact they got a foul. We stopped trying to rebound about 10 minutes into the first half.

And the final blocking foul on Dorsey - he was set and leaning over backwards.

Unfortunately, Memphis snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory!  It was so hard to watch the end of the game.  You can't blame this loss entirely on bad officiating.  They lost because they buckled under pressure and missed free throws!  In all fairness, they had a GREAT year and I am so happy they made it as far as they did!  We need to be proud of our Tigers!

They also missed the chance to take a bunch of free throws because fouls were not called. Sometimes three or four in a "turnover".  I though I was watching Ultimate Fighting on the TIVO slow motion. Many of the turnovers we made in the first half were the result of reaching in and slapping by Kansas.  The officiating in the first half was horrible - it was a little better in the second half.

As far as buckling under pressure - that is easy to say from this side of the TV.  CDR will regret that final play and the free throws forever.  He should have held the ball. But he made thousands of other good ones.

The officiating changed that game - from 10 minutes in the first half on. We couldn't go for a rebound and it was obvious Calipari was telling them not to go up hard.  We weren't even getting off the floor or raising our hands for part of the game.  Every time we did and there was incidental contact - we caught a foul.  They never seemed to on their incessant slapping and going over Dorsey's back (at least three times).

If you recorded it - watch it and slow motion it.  Our players shouldn't have looked to the refs for calls while the play was going on - they shouldn't have had to.  The first half officiating was horrible and completely one sided.
