Speak Up! Memphis

Accused Hit & Run Driver Posts $100 Bond and then Fails to Appear in Court

The man accused of hitting a Memphis Police officer Thursday is now back in the custody of police. Officials say Avenamar Perez failed to show up for his court appearance Friday morning.

Perez is accused of hitting Lt. George Quinn Thursday morning, who was stopped on his motorcycle at a traffic light at Lamar Avenue and Democrat. Police say Perez drove off, leaving Quinn lying on the ground. A witness was able to dispatch police using Quinn's radio, while two other drivers chased Perez. Police say the two drivers spoke to police dispatchers via cell phone. Police caught Perez at Nonconnah Parkway and Riverdale Road and arrested him, with charges of leaving the scene of an accident, disregarding a traffic signal, no driver's license and unregistered tags.

Officials say Perez posted a $100 bond and was released Thursday night. He was supposed to appear in court Friday morning, but failed to do so. Deputies went to Perez's home Friday afternoon in the 2500 block of Ketchum and he was arrested again.

What do you think? Was $100 bond enough? It's your turn to Speak Up! Memphis.

Is this crazy or what?!?  Perez failed to show up for his court appearance after bonding out the first time.  If he raises the money for his second bond, he'll be able to get out of jail again?  Does anyone honestly think he'll come back for his next court appearance?  He'll bond out and just either go back home to Mexico or move on to the next unsuspecting community.

If I were the office injured, I would take this as a personal slap in the face.

I'm not from Memphis but, I am from Los Angeles. All I can say if you are for supporting illegal immigration is --good luck. That's it, good luck. People either learn the lessons or they don't--right? Everyone by now should know what illegal immigration is all about, who wants it, and what it does. No more excuses.

I live in Phoenix, AZ. Just another example of what illegals are doing to our cities. Here in Phoenix, 5 of the last 7 police officers killed in the line of duty have been by illegals, yet sanctuary city policies remain in effect, although our stupid mayor Phil Gordon and Police Chief Jack Harris deny we are a "sanctuary" city. Middle class America, you better wake up before it's too late.

I almost can't believe what I'am reading, this is an outrage. He prohibly is an illegal alien, they are known to leave the scene of an accident to avoid getting deported. They need to deport hm but make sure he doesn't come back.

Whether your city officials and/or police managers will admit it, they operate an "illegal alien sanctuary."  Giving bond to someone with a previous FTA is ludicrous; if they don't know he's an illegal alien (and from 1500 miles distance in Phoenix AZ, I guarantee that he is), it's because they don't want to know or have been told "don't ask, don't tell."

When the cop says "no comment," he's acknowledging that he knows of the sanctuary policy and knows better than to speak out against it.

I would hope Memphis residents don't need to learn the same lessons as we in border states--give them an inch, and they'll take a mile.

As for your city officials who enable and perpetuate this outrage, give them the boot!

It's apparent Memphis is not serious about its self image.  If in fact your law is bent to the degree as suggested, Memphis is in need of serious help.  Thank god, I live in a state where common sense remains on the books.  All I can say is: Good luck you poor ignorant Memphis.
