From consolidating governments, to taking control of Memphis City Schools, to cleaning up Memphis - Mayor Willie Herenton laid out some of his goals for the City of Memphis Wednesday, January 2, 2008, during his annual State of the City address.
Mayor Herenton once again brought up the subject of consolidation between the City of Memphis and Shelby County. Mayor Herenton said he is looking at new ways to merge the two governments.
"I love Memphis. If you love Memphis, the way I do, you'll roll up your sleeves, you'll join in and say, 'how can I help this city to be a better city'", Herenton said.
Herenton said the reason the governments need to come together is because minority owners can no longer afford the tax burden.
"Yes, yes, I am singing out of this choir book again. We must consolidate these governments. Can Willie wave a wand and make it happen? No."
At this time, unless City and County voters both sign off on consolidating governments, it will not happen. City voters have voted in favor of consolidation, while county voters opposed the idea. Mayor Herenton is now hoping to get the law changed.
"We allow a minority of suburbanites to determine what is in our best interest. We must seek legislation to change that," Herenton said.
Mayor Herenton also spoke about reducing crime, making Memphis a cleaner city and making changes to the structure of Memphis City Schools. He wants to make changes that would give the Mayor's Office more control of the school system.
When asked about expanding the riverfront, he answered with a unique idea.
"If Bass Pro fails to come into reality, I don't think it's unimaginable to talk about tearing down the Pyramid."
He later clarified his position by saying there are no plans to implode the Pyramid, but said:
"If we don't become imaginative, then we are going to miss an opportunity. I don't want this community to miss an opportunity."
In 2007's State of the City address, Mayor Herenton announced he wanted the police department to have a "real time crime center." He also wanted to hire more police officers and tear down abandoned homes. In the past year, the city has hired more than 100 officers, the crime center is scheduled to open in February 2008 and dozens of vacant homes are being torn down.
