The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department tells Eyewitness News Everywhere that a deputy, who was shot two times at a trailer park, shot himself.
Investigators say Deputy John Staggs was fired Wednesday, January 2 after an investigation revealed Staggs filed a false firing report. Staggs told investigators he was shot in the line of duty Friday, December 28. He said he approached two men in a car at the Lakeview Mobile Home Park when a shootout occurred. Staggs was hit in the arm and shoulder; he was taken to the Med in stable condition.
Investigators say Staggs shot himself and he now admits it.
Staggs has been with the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department for over two years. A spokesperson for the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department says he does not expect any charges to be filed against Staggs.
