He deserves to be fired. The man power utilized that night to search for (2) males  that was a make believe story needs to be paid from any compensation that the department will be giving him upon his firing should be kept for those funds that he accrued for the search. Why would he shoot himself, and make up this lie?  Does he have a mental issue. or drug addiction, or perhaps wanted the attention as this officer that took (2) bullets while protecting and serving?  I do not feel sorry for him, but the embarassment that he has caused his family, the department, and the community, he should be ashamed.  And the citizens that were interviewed by the news media supported him for doing a dangerous job.  The community was outraged and so outspoken to support him for taking those bullets while performing a job, but to later say he made the story up based on his lies.  What a ASHAME!

What a total jackass. I feel sorry for the smear that this idiot caused on the reputation of Law Enforcement officers. This guy needs, not only to be fired, but needs to be prosecuted. To the men and women of the Desoto County Sheriff's Department:  I, for one, do not judge you or your department based on the actions of this moron. this doesn't surprise me at all. policemen do it all the time and the sad part about is that they get away with it. now let this have been pookie or ray ray they would not have just gotten fired they would have gotten some unheard of charges brought against them for sending  the sherriff's (not the police department ) on a wild goose chase. futhermore let's see if this blows up like the "aundria jones" incident. i'll bet all the tea in china it don't.

Good....they fired him, but he should be brought up on charges of, at the very least, filing a false report.  He should also have to reimburse the sheriff's department for any funds used to investigate the false claim.  I hope he gets help!  He obviously needs it.  

@ Orange Mound....there is a HUGE difference between shooting yourself and leaving your children home alone to party while your children are burning up in a fire.  If you don't see that, you are really in sad shape.

This is the very reason that I hate getting stopped by the police on some dark road in Mississippi. And they expect you stop. I dont trust them. This guy pulled me over once because he wanted to know where was I going at 2am. Not all law enforcement officers are jerks, but some are cowards.

No charges what the hell is that if I called and reported that I was kidnapped and then just showed up later like nothing happened then I would get arrested and thats basically what he did, he should have had more done to him then just being fired...........They always act like cops are so innocent just more proof that they are crooked too

Why not file charges against him? If he was a regular citizen you'd file charges for him filing a False report, Hes no different than any of us regular citizens! Charge Him!!

i am very confused as to why this has to be a black/white issue. what that woman did was practically MURDER two young kids. this gentleman didn't hurt anyone, he made a very bad decision. i do not feel that he should get away with it. he should be punished to the fullest. with that being said, these situations shoudn't be confused as "equal" on any level.

With all of the real crime happening this is very unfortunate. There are many good LE officers out there, but the few that do things like this give the others a bad name. I wonder what's in his personnel file, if he has a criminal history, or has he been tested for drugs lately? I doubt that this is the first sign of his crazy behavior. I can't believe that he isn't being charged, but then again, I can! What does that say about the people that made that decision. It doesn't speak well for the dept or the DA's office.

I would bet that if Officer Staggs would not have told the truth in the interview he did with the investigators. that the charges for falsafying a report would have been placed on him. I know that cops use this as a tool for getting confesions out of someone. Just a thought?

to SAlford30- if you would pay attention he shot himself not someone else. also cops don't go looking for someone to kill or shoot. they put their lives in danger everyday they go to work. just think everytime someone is breaking into your house or beating ur ass you want the cops to come right. or when ur car is stolen or a loved one is killed. most of the time when a cop shoots someone they were in the progress of committing a crime or shooting at them first. i say if you don't like how they do their job go to the academy work ur way up the ranks and change the policy. until then you nor anyone else should judge police. true this officer did something really stupid, it does not give anyone the right to talk about the rest of the officers or department they work for. look at how bad crime is now with cops trying to make a difference. just think how bad it would be without them. i say we should stand behind our officers and help them stop the crime instead of putting the good ones down.    

my biggest concern is the what if factor, what if somebody had been arrested,and
