Man Accused Of Intentionally Dropping Infant Son

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Police in Nashville arrested a man they accuse of intentionally dropping his infant son on his head in a market parking lot.

Police say Rodney Sanders was very drunk and arguing with his wife when he held his 12 day-old son, Rodney Sanders III, about shoulder height and dropped him head-down onto the asphalt pavement on Saturday, January 5, 2008.

Investigators say the child was knocked unconscious, but was later reported in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Children's Hospital.

Police charged Sanders with aggravated child abuse and public intoxication.

Officers say Sanders told his wife he was tired of her having only male children and that he wanted girls.

why was the drunken fool allowed to carry the baby?  sounds like mom doesn't have to best judgement in men or in situations.  no arguementive drunken fool would be allowed around my children let alone carry one of them.

Outspoken! How dare you blast the mom for what he did.

Sounds like you dont have good judgement in men also, since your ex-husband left you a single parent.

How dare I make that comment about you!
I dont know you!
Dont judge people w/o all the facts is the point I'm trying to make.
You are talking bad about this mom when you dont know what the situation was. He could have taken the baby from the crib without her knowing.
Do not but her on blast for his mistake.

You cannot hold people responsible for others actions. If that is the case your current husband is responsible for his kids being deadbeats(drug abusers). What does that say about his character, he rasied them. Or did they get that from him?????????

Think before you post!!!! Dont always assume the worst about people.

Lock him up and throw away the key!!!! Just b/c you and your spouse fight is no reason to take it out on a 12 day old baby!!!! That is the lamest excuse to blame being DRUNK!!! Get a grip! I wish some one would drop him on his head and see how it effects him, couldnt do much more damage then what the alchol is already doing. Take the baby away from the sicko!!!!!

He should have been charged with attempted murder. If you drop a a 12 day old baby on an asphalt pavement intentionally you are trying to kill the baby.

@ Think....you know, Outspoken does have a point.  If I was with my significant other and he was drunk, I would not allow him to hold my baby.  That's just common sense.

I'm not saying that baby should not have been protected. What I'm saying is no one know how he got the baby. If she was in kitchen and the baby was in his crib and he ran into the childs room and grab him from the crib, how can you hold the mom responsible by saying she was not protecting her child.

Of course no one in there right mind would allow a drunken person to hold there child. My point to you is not to judge her  saying she was not being responsible when there is a lack of information regarding what the mother was doing when he got the baby. You guys are just automatically assuming this woman allowed this drunken man to hold her baby. Not knowing all the facts.

They were out in a market parking lot.....it's not like he just ran to the bedroom to get a crying baby.  If he was drunk, the mother should have taken the responsibility to handle the baby and not leave it up to her drunken husband.  That is a judgment yes.....not necessarily of the person but of the situation.  Facts are facts......it's obvious she wasn't being responsible or that man would have never had his hands on that baby in his condition.

In my opinion, given that he told the officers he wanted female children and was tired of having male children, it sounds like he dropped the child on purpose.  It cannot be a surprise to the mother that this man is a nut case.  Why is she with him anyway?  And, if he is a nut case, she should never have let him take the baby in the first place.  Call me judgmental if you want, but like I said before, facts are facts.

I must agree with everyone in putting some sort of fault on the mother. Why would anyone let a person whom they know is drunk hold a 12-day old infant? She should have done everything in her power to make sure she was the one holding the baby, protecting it from the drunk father at any costs. They were not in the house having this arguement. He did not run into another room and take the baby from the crib. They were out in public shopping. He was holding the baby outside of the market and dropped him. He was angry and drunk and dropped the baby because he was "tired of her having only male children and that he wanted girls." He knew what he was doing, drunk or not. He wanted to hurt that baby and punish it for being a boy. I just have no tollerance for people who hurt innocent children who can't defend themselves. I have to agree with Renee....drop the drunk on his head and see how he likes it.

By the way, that ignorant fool probably doesn't know the male determines the sex of the child....not the mother!  What a moron!

I hope this a**hole is locked up for the rest of his life.  There is NO excuse for harming a baby, ever.  If he was that drunk that he didn't realize that he was putting his baby's life in jeopardy, then he should not have been allowed within 100 feet of the baby, and that blame falls on the mother.  Normally I would be with you, Think, and reserve judgement on her, but she knew he was drunk and she knew her baby was nearby, she should never have allowed the two to even be in the same building (or parking lot, if that's where they were).  I'm glad to see that the baby is in stable condition, and can only hope and pray that he makes a full recovery with no memory of this horrific event.

Did anyone stop to inform this idiot that a woman only has carrires one chromosome!

The Y chromosome is the sex-determining chromosome in humans.  Males have one Y chromosome and one X chromosome, while females have two X chromosomes.  Which means that women cannot determine the sex of a child since she only carries one chromosome.  Men carry the extra chromosome which will determine the sex of a child.  So, it’s not the woman’s fault that she’s producing boys.  This is very basic biology people.

Since he dropped that baby on purpose he needs to be charged with more than that. He his a selfish fool who needs to be dropped on his damn head. I'm glad that the baby is ok. If he was tired of having boys then he should of done something else about it(adopt). The baby don't know what he wants and can't do anything about it. This dude is crazy and needs help asap.
