TN Lawmaker Wants to Ban Toy Guns That Look Real

A Memphis lawmaker wants to ban toy guns in Tennessee that resemble real guns. This comes on the heels of the DeAunta Farrow shooting investigation in West Memphis, where 12 year-old DeAunta Farrow was shot and killed by a former West Memphis police officer.

Former officer Erik Sammis told investigators he believed Farrow was holding a gun on the night of June 22, 2007. Investigators later revealed the gun Farrow was holding was a toy.

Rep. John DeBerry, plans to file a bill banning the toy guns, saying "we need to outlaw these things that are getting 12 year-old kids killed."

The first day of the 2008 legislative session began Tuesday, January 8.

What do you think? It's your turn to Speak Up! Memphis.

Banning toy guns would be fine but from my understanding the toy gun didn't belong to that 12 year old otherwise his prints would be all over it. So where did THIS toy gun come from uumm my guess is from the police department, So what do we do with their setup toy guns are they to be ban to.

Banning toy guns would only take the responsibility off the parents, which whom is to blame in situations such as this one. Every time a child has a conflict with the law, the finger is pointed towards everyone in society except the parents. Parents simply need to take the time to raise their children!

I have seen these new toy guns here in Virginia they are transparent.  But the kids buy  and spray paint them brown and black Ta Daaa.  Instant AK-47 or M16, and these are white kids doing this every Saturday.

Hell they now sell the ankle, waist belt, and  shoulder holsters for the Daisy Berretta Walter PPK pellet pistol this is asking for trouble.   Yet kids runaround with these toys all the time police see them and no deaths.  The police do not shoot or draw their weapons or kids here.  The police here are very tough and in my opinion I wouldn't want to get stop here for anything illegal.

They pulled over a suspected gun runner the police commands were, "GET OUT OF THE CAR OR WE WILL OPEN FIRE"!!!  MEMPHIS POLICE DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO RETRAINED .

Even an untrained person can tell the difference from the red piece on this toy but if you cut it off or paint it black then maybe.

Last year in Kansas or Denver a police office seen a teen ager drew one these on a person the officer drew his weapon, seen the red piece re holstered his weapon.  Gave the kid a swift kick in the back side after taking the toy.

His punishment fired......  It's about control and abuse of power, but I would have kicked the kid too.

The other parental fear has been that police officers will react to realistic-looking toy guns the way they are taught to react to real guns: by firing.

Out all these shootings only one officer was fired, for kicking the teen white police officer black.  we did recognized the gun as a toy.

Correct me if im wrong...but they may be able to buy a toy gun under 18 but dont you have to be 18 to buy spray paint?? Thats where the parents would play a part!!!  I think if they arent going to ban guns they should atleast make them a completely different color like a bright green or bright orange there is no need for a kid to have a "real looking" gun anyways!!!  I have no problem with this law!

I reside in Virgnia the laws are a little different here.  The Governor just signed that rape victims must pay for their rape exam this will save the state Millions of dollars annually.

And rape victims will no longer have to take lie detector test after July, I must say this all democrats want is your money your money at any price and then you suppose to be safe.

Look at who is pushing the bill, then look at how much your taxes are going up for peace of mind......

Most women are not into firearms and I can respect that answer, but if a kid drew that toy weapon on me and I see that "RED TIP".

I DON'T CARE WHO CHILD IT IS I AM GOING TO BEAT THE CRAP OUT THAT INDIVIDUAL.

I OWN SEVERAL FIREARMS HANDGUNS AND RIFLES AND FOR THE MOST PART I SEE THESE PELLET PISTOLS AND CAN TELL REAL FROM TOY.  YET AT A DISTANT IT CAN BE A TOSS. IF YOU FAMILIARIZE YOUR SELF WITH DIFFERENT GUNS YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TELL MOST REAL WEAPONS FROM FAKE.

I understand what you mean. I am not well knowing about firearms. That is not something I will try to fake her on a blog. No, I don't know much about them. I was raised around them, went shooting often growing up, but it hasn't been something Iv continued. What I meant about the gun is that if you look at everything besides the tip, its just unreal. Yes, in the light where I could see the tip, I would hesitate long enough NOT to shoot. But at night, I might find myself in another situation...

THE WORLD TODAY IS NOT LIKE IT WAS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER YOU NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE GETTING KILLED BECAUSE THE OFFICER OR ANYONE THOUGHT YOU HAD A REAL GUN  WHEN IT WAS JUST A TOY (I'M IN MY 30S'S NOW) KIDS PLAYED COPS AND ROBBERS COWBOYS AND INDIANS FOR YEARS.

I WON'T BLAME THE PARENTS, BECAUSE THE PARENTS AREN'T ALWAYS THE ONE BUYING THE TOY GUNS.  SOME KIDS HAVE A LITTLE MONEY AND THEY TBUY THEM, SOME FAMILY MEMBERS BUY THEM, AND MAY BE EVEN THEIR FRIENDS.  MAYBE IT'S SOCIETY, TV, MUSIC VIDEOS (NOT ALL), AND EVEN THE SURROUNDINGS.

THE ONLY THING WE AS PARENTS AND FRIENDS CAN DO IS TO EXPLAIN TO OUR CHILDREN WHAT TO DO AND NOT TO DO WITH THE TOY GUNS AND EVEN TOY KNIVES.  MAYBE IF BANNING THEM DOESN'T WORK THE MANUFACTURERS CAN ADD WARNING LABELS LIKE THEY DO OTHER PRODUCTS THAT MY MAY BE DANGEROUS.

Let's face it, a lot of parents are irresponsible or don't see the seriousness of this issue. I was at a nursing home where a young father brought his son, about 4 years old I'd guess to visit his grandmother who worked there. He let the child bring his toy gun to the nursing home and they were joking about him pretending to shooting people. That's disgusting! What kind of message do you think that sends to the child? I say ban them!

You can ban the world and it will not work, it's responsibility and education and know what is going to happen when a person screw up........

You do make a good point...however.....there are some idiots that call themselves parents that lack the knowledge to teach personal responsibility.....  I dont have a problem with this law it will not hurt me in any way if it does go into effect.  I would hate to see toy guns go b/c when I was a kid...cops and robbers with my brother was a fun game....so were cowboys and indians!!!  I hate that it comes down to making a law b/c of lack of parenting but if it will save a kids life then so be it!  Its just one more life saved!!  Its sad that responsible parents will have to take toy guns away from thier kids b/c of the irresponsible ones!

As bad as it sounds, maybe some people should kill temselves off.  Sorry for my cynicism.

My words were not meant as a intimidation pun.  Only to state a fact that I would not take a person lightly if a child's toy were use to elicit money from me.   And that my resolve would be very brutal.

I would not kill a person for such a  stupid ploy.  Yet I will make damn sure he remember it the next time someone wants to take money instead of getting a job and earning a honest living.

British Strange News: Hillary Clinton Cries on the Campaign Trail

Frank  said...
No wonder she don't want to talk to any of your enemies in her first year in office. She needed more time to be seasoned to be commander-in-chief.

She'll cry before Chavez, Castro, etc., if confronted with a difficult situation or when they said a mean thing to her like Chavez insulted GWB at the UN.

Hillary is a wonderful New York Senator and should hurry back to her senatorial job.

I sympathize with her though, having all these 35 years experience and not having a chance to rule the kingdom for another 8 years, afterall it's her turn. We owe the White House to Hill for sticking with Bill during the impeachment saga.

I believe it is a parent's responsibility to teach children you dont point even toy guns at people. Some may say this takes the "fun" out of playing with toy guns. Well, my father was an avid hunter, had many guns in the home, and also taught us you NEVER point any type of gun at someone. I mean yes, we shot each other with water guns, in our own yards. But also that was a different time. Everything is different now. And what was this kid thinking he was doing pointing the "toy gun" at a police officer anyway?? Maybe we should look deeper and figure out how to solve the fact that we have turned this into a world where this is even something to worry about.  Teach our kids the proper way to behave, and that it's not "cool" to be "hard". I don't blame music, videos, or tv shows for our kids thinking this way. I believe it's our responsiblity to say "Yes, its out there, it doesn't make it right".  What I don't get is it all seems to boil down to the same thing...Times are different. Somewhere along the way people stopped teaching children morales and respect.
(Don't get me wrong, I am in no way implying I am a "perfect" parent. This is just what I think.)
