This is hillarious. Who in their right mind would vote for mayor willie as a top 50 candidate. There is no way he qualifies for any part of that list. He cannot get along with anyone he works with, including the city councils, memphis is at the top of the list for most violent cities in America, and he is one of the most racist mayors I have ever seen. All of his speeches mention how bad the whites in memphis are and how everything is their fault. He is one of the main contributors as to why memphis is so racist. Give me a break. Looks like to me he bought hundreds of votes to get on this list.

I went to the website and submitted the following comments:  I cannot believe ANYONE in their right mind would nominate Willie Herenton of Memphis for anything.  This man is a racist, a bigot and a criminal.  In reference to the racial division and problems in Memphis, his answer was "I didn't break it."  He also refers to the "white haters" a lot.  This is a man who has been implicated several times in shady deals who constantly associates with known criminals.  I am shocked that you would even allow a man of such obvious lack of character to be a part of this contest.  Don't you people do any research about the candidates?

I understand why the King has his following, Hickory Hill was a beautiful place and now it is section 8. many people got to move out of crappy housing to live in houses that they never before could have dreamed of living in, though it was completely at the cost of middle and upper class homeownvers who had to sell their homes for a loss and in some cases a massive loss, anywhere else in the country you would have made money on real estate, but this city has one angle and everyone knows it. It is all about giving to those who dont have which sounds ok until you throw in at the expense of those who work hard to have and suffer deeply b/c of this agenda. Its not just white black, black middle and upper class are leaving memphis in droves too, its just too mismanaged and unsafe, the police can arrest a million people but when you arrest someone for breaking in houses and cars and they get a 100 dollar bond and then do it again a week later and get another cheap bond and then do it again.... and people wonder why we have sooo much crime two reasons are  liberal judges and juries that will not convict a comrade. This is the most anti police town I have ever lived in. As for the Mayor, I wish he would concentrate of making memphis better for everyone and not just his core following, that is what strong leaders do, in the end it would benefit everyone and maybe the tide leaving mempis would wain.

there are plenty of white gangs, and there are some in memphis that are active, gangs are everywhere, most of then ones here are not hard core like in LA and other cities, they wont admit affiliation here for the most part. We do have gang affiliates working in the jails as jailers and there are some on the police department, there will be a lot more now that they have lowered the standards regrettably, that will be evident in a few years through a slew of indictments that will be handed down, I will remind you I said this when it happens. I have several black friends who are top notch and I say hire guys like this for any capacity, but when we start hiring warm bodies b/c of affirmative action in important posts, we will all suffer. At one job I was recently in the standards were lower for a minority to get the same job I had and I had at least two minority buddies who had as good or better qualifications than myself, why lower standards when you dont have too, there are plenty of hardworking capable minorities here and you are cheating them by doing this and big AL S and Jessie J are the worst ones heading that up in my opinion, they act like the people they represent cant do anything on their own w/o a leg up. At least our mayor did keep those nuts out of memphis when they tried to stir up a bunch of crap on renaming the park. Raleigh is beyond repair. No one is willing to fix it. And I don't blame them. Certain parts of memphis will continue to decline because no one wants to put forth the effort to fix it. Hey Amanda....I actually live in Frayser.  I understand what you mean about beyond repair.  We live on a very nice cove, surrounded mostly by elderly people who have been there for 30 or 40 years, and are unwilling and economically unable to move.  There are a couple of young families too...solid, middle class, hard-working parents with young kids.  They won't be there much longer.  When their kids are old enough to go to school, they will move.  I can't say as I blame them.  We never have any trouble in our area.....as you know, there is Frayser...and then there is Frayser.  But the few good areas are being constantly eroded.  Soon only the drug dealers and the Section 8  folks will be left.

WOW!  Where do I begin?  It appears that this "blog" has turned into bedlam, with no chance of normalcy in sight.  Let me start by saying that I respect everyone's opinions...I may not necessarily agree with them, but I respect them.  Next, let me say that I moved to Memphis a little over 2 years ago.  My first impressions were very good ones...several beautiful communities, a bustling downtown, and property values that appeared to be holding their own.  THEN...all of that changed when I heard the Mayor speak for the first time.  The man has a Doctorate, yet cannot manage a simple declarative sentence.  He is the Mayor of a very racially diverse city...yet he finds it necessary to exacerbate the city's racial sensitivity by using the term "haters."  That, above all else, is wreckless, irresponsible, and, quite honestly, juvenile!  We can argue racial barriers and differences all day long...and still never get anywhere.  However, if we ARE going to argue, let's argue about how to fix the situation.  Ultimately, regardless of what some people on here have said, it IS the Mayor's responsibility...he is the acting CEO of Memphis.  He ultimately is responible for, and answers to, the citizens of Memphis.  YES...it is unfortunate that he was reelected.  YES...it is unfortunate that he has embarassed the city of Memphis, and has tarnished it's reputation beyond repair.  YES...it is unfortunate that we have to endure his "simpleton" mindset and complete lack of respect for human life and dignity, as we know it, for the next few years.  But, it is also unfortunate that we have used this type of forum to confirm his notion that "haters" exist in Memphis.  How can we, as educated individuals, give him that power?  I've read about white "haters," and African American "haters," and every other type of "hater" that may be in existance.  Put this God-forsaken word to rest!  We are NOT "haters"; we are all individuals with differing opinions.  Stop arguing with each other, and point the finger at the person who is ultimately responsible for the mess Memphis has found itself in: Mayor Willie Herenton.  There is no corporation in America that would allow it's CEO to be so careless with words, wreckless with actions, and naive to the wants, and needs, of those they lead.  Why should we be so gracious with the Mayor?  The answer is: WE SHOULDN'T.  We need to focus more attention on his wrong-doings, lack of leadership, and overall incompetence rather than on beating down one another with our words.  We, as registered voters in the city of Memphis, have the power to hold him accountable.  We have the power to call his actions and words on the carpet.  And, he has the obligation and duty, to answer us truthfully, openly, and without reservation.  C'mon folks...your words are VERY powerful on here...use their power to make "he who is responsible" be held accountable for the quagmire that we have find ourselves in!

Bartlettman...I understand what you are saying...honestly, I do!  However, we're not helping the situation by "pissing people off."  We are only proving that we are content with the status quo ourselves.  I, for one, cannot, and will not, be complacent and pray for the day that a leader actually does step up and take over.  We have the power to help make it happen.  Perhaps I'm too much of a visionary...too optimistic...or too much of an antogonist.  But I honestly think that we end up in a vicious cycle of cynicism, negativity, and bigotry by NOT focusing on the perpetrator of all this.  If half of the energy we have spent "pissing people off" were spent on going after the Mayor, change would become realistic and possible; maybe even inevitable.  I'm not trying to piss anyone off...just putting out some food for thought.

Barlettman, you need to stop blaming blacks for lowering  property values and crimes. There are white, hispanic, and a lot of other races who commit crimes and don't take care of their properties. There is crime all of the country, even in the so-called good neighborhoods. You'll be surprised that some of it is committed by whites. If you don't like what our mayor is doing don't vote for him. Next election find a canidate you like and campaign for him. Actually why don't you run for mayor since you seem to have all these complaints. See how easy it is to be the mayor of this city. Obviously you  are young. You haven’t lived in Memphis for years and had to move from a home and neighborhood that you loved because of crime and deteriorating housing. I HAVE and yes, it was mostly blacks. Nobody is speaking of ALL blacks! Certainly there are whites, hispanics, etc that commit crimes and destroy homes but  I have experience and I KNOW what happened to Oakhaven, East Memphis AND Hickory Hill.  Until you grow up, own your own home and have to leave several when you don’t want to, you'd do well to pick another subject!

First of all my parents have always kept me and my mind in worldly things. My mother is a real estate agent and a loan officer. I see different areas of Memphis and different credit scores of  all kinds of  people. My uncle is on the police force I've listened to his expericences and have actually seen different situations where it was a white person committing a crime against a upper class black person. My father just retired from the army and has rasied me to speak my mind when I don't agree with something. I'm also going to school to be a lawyer but before I started college I was reading books on the law and government, so before you call me naive and tell me to come back in 15 years make sure I'm not an intelligent young lady who actually thinks before she makes a statement.
@ Barlettman I never said white came to black neighborhoods and brought them down but at the same time when I first moved to Barlett I had 2 white little boys chase me with their bb guns for no reason other than I was the new person in the neighborhood. So please don't insult my intelligence :-)

Young-but-educated...first, and foremost, I appreciate the fact that your mother is a real estate agent.  HOWEVER, it is illegal for YOU to be viewing the credit scores of your mother's clients.  Now, if you're going to claim that you are NOT naive, please consider the statement you made regarding this.  I believe that is textbook naive.  Furthermore, I do not believe anyone was insulting your intelligence.  BUT, keep in mind that reading books on law and government cannot, and should not, be put into the same category as real life experience.  My parents raised me properly as well, and to speak my mind.  However, with that being said, I also had enough common sense (that which did NOT come from reading a book) to not speak ill of people, insult them, and then counter-attack them claiming they were insulting me.  I also learned where, even as a teenager, my place was...and it was not necessarily always in the middle of an adult conversation.  On one hand, I acknowledge the fact that you are young, idealistic, and obviously, educated.  On the other hand, I acknowledge the fact that you have too little experience (as I mentioned above) in the ways of the world.  Granted, you grew up with your father in the military...my spouse's father grew up in the military as well, and everyone in the family will agree that growing up in the military often times shields you from the way things truly are, and often distorts your sense of reality.  No one is questioning your intelligence...no one is questioning your God-given right to speak up when you disagree with something.  What people are disagreeing with is the lack of maturity you are displaying with your comments.

Actually I practice my Spanish everyday around this time. It has nothing to do with being able or unable to express myself like an adult or having an advantage. I'm proud of my cuban,Puerto Rican, and Mexican heritage as well as being black, Irish, Native american, creole, and white.

They were talking about this on Rock 103 this morning.  I was so disgusted that I came straight home and looked up the web site (just type in citymayors.com).  I will send an e-mail to them and encourage every concerned citizen of Memphis to do the same.  Obviously, those people couldn't have done any research of their own, and who did the voting?  It had to be an inside job!  It seems most people feel the same; they are tired of his racist comments and the way he has ruined this city.  I grew up in Frazier and Parkway Village.  Now days, I'd be scared to drive through there.  If it were a white man or any other race making the racist comments Mayor Herenton makes, there would be some "reverend" or someone fervently jumping on the band wagon and it would be all over the national news.  Racism is dicrimination against skin color, be it white, black, brown or yellow.   Seriously, who do we call to represent US against racism because I think it is way past time for somebody to stand up against this kind of behavior.  Who has the  authority to hold the Mayor responsible for his racist remarks and actions?  Does anybody know.  This is the very thing that Martin Luther King worked so hard against, yet it has turned into racism against whites, at least here in this City, thanks to the mayor keeping racism stirred up.  I think Martin Luther would roll over in his grave to know how many people of his race are actually racists.  I was raised to love everyone for who they are, not the color of their skin, and this is what I have tried to teach to my own kids, but it is very hard to justify it to them when they hear the Mayor (supposedly a figure of authority and respect) talking like he does on the news and when my kids go to school and have to hear racist comments made against them because they are white and even threats against them.  I'm so sick to death of this it makes me want to throw up!  Thanks --- I had to vent on this.

YBE...I will not discredit your claim that everyone has some immaturity to them.  However, I will stand firm on the notion that NOT ONCE did I downplay, condemn, or belittle anyone for voting for Mayor Herenton.  I downplayed, condemned, and belittled Mayor Herenton himself.  We all have the right to vote...and I for one could care less who anyone votes for.  It is the person running for office, who ultimately gets elected and sworn in, who has the duty...no, better yet, the obligation...to fulfill that office to the best of his/her ability.  The current Mayor has failed to do so on several issues, in several arenas, and on many occasions.  Again, I appreciate the fact that you are passionate about what you believe in...BUT, as you said, let's agree to disagree WITHOUT throwing all morals and ethics out the window.  It truly defeats the purpose, and makes us look foolish in the end.

About a year ago or so, Willie Herenton was on the news and he said "until the white kids in the county suffer" , which I believe he was referring about education money. One of the criteria to be on this world's best Mayor was about  (foster good relations among different races) and yet the Mayor of Memphis said this on THE LOCAL NEWS !!!!!!!

And the crime in this city (has been many times around the top 5 and 10 in the entire country) has also been goin on under Mayor Herenton for the past 4 terms in office, and that is what like 16 yrsssssssss.

Hey, can one of you articulate people on here email the news channels who are talking about Herenton getting this "honor" and tell them to look at the OTHER side of the story and put some of these comments on TV? Clinton accused of 1978 hotel rape

Just a week after his acquittal in the Senate impeachment trial, Bill Clinton faces a fresh scandal about his past sexual conduct after a former campaign worker alleged that he raped her 21 years ago.

Juanita Broaddrick, who now runs a nursing-home business in Arkansas, told the Wall Street Journal that Mr Clinton raped her in the Camelot Hotel in Little Rock in 1978, when he was the state attorney-general.

The newspaper reports that Mr Clinton persuaded Mrs Broaddrick to have coffee with him in her hotel room during a conference of nursing home administrators in 1978. She alleges that he then forced her on to the bed, where he held her down, bit her lips and raped her.

When it was over, Mrs Broaddrick claims, Mr Clinton told her that she should not worry because he was sterile due to a bout of childhood mumps.

Mrs Broaddrick is not directly quoted in the Journal's account of the alleged rape but in response to Mr Clinton's sterility claim she said: "As though that was the thing on my mind - I wasn't thinking about pregnancy or about anything. I felt paralysed and was starting to cry."

She added: "This is the part that always stays in my mind - the way he put on his sunglasses. Then he looked at me and said 'You better put some ice on that'. Then he left."

Norma Rogers, a friend of Mrs Broaddrick, told the Journal that she found the alleged victim in a state of shock. In reported speech, she is said to have alleged that Mrs Broaddrick's lips were discoloured and swollen to twice their normal size and the crotch of her tights was torn.

"She just stayed on the bed and kept repeating 'I can't believe what happened'," Mrs Rogers said.

Mrs Broaddrick's story has been the subject of rumours for years, and was widely circulated in 1992 when Mr Clinton was running for president.

Until now she has refused to speak about the incident, and denied the story in an affidavit to lawyers for Paula Jones, who brought a sexual harassment case against Mr Clinton in 1994.

Mrs Broaddrick's story surfaced in an American supermarket tabloid magazine in January, along with subsequently disproved claims that Mr Clinton had fathered the son of a black prostitute in Little Rock.

On January 20 Mrs Broaddrick finally gave NBC television what is said to be her first media interview confirming the original rape allegation.

Though scheduled for airing on January 29, the NBC interview has not yet been broadcast. NBC has described it as a "work in progress" - leading to rumours that the White House had put pressure on the network to withhold the story.

The allegations come at a time when many of those involved in the past year's presidential crisis - including Monica Lewinsky, Linda Tripp and Gennifer Flowers - are telling their stories in books and media interviews.

Mrs Broaddrick has also claimed that in 1991 she was called out of a meeting to discover Mr Clinton waiting for her.

She said that he told her he wished to apologise and asked what he could do to make things up to her. Mrs Broaddrick said he could do nothing, and walked away.

Shortly afterwards, Mr Clinton announced his presidential bid.

I urge anyone in Memphis or the cities surrounding Memphis to add their comments to the organizers of this "contest". If it's true that they count and read every vote, then the truth will come out.  This was my comment to them:   I am extremely disturbed that Willie Herenton could even be considered a "Mayor" much less in the top 50 mayors in the world.  He instigates racial unrest, believes that his personal agendas outweigh the needs of the citizens of Memphis, and has allowed crime in the city to run rampant.  Herenton is certifiably insane and is only mayor here because of the apathy of the voters to go to the polls and vote against him.  They assume that he is so bad, he will surely lose the election, so...they don't vote and he stays in office.  He destroyed the Memphis city school system, now one of the worst in the nation, when he was on the board of education.  Now he wants the governor to give him control over the rest of the schools in Shelby County.  The county schools have considerably less money, but get very high scores for educating the children in their districts. Thousands of families uprooted and moved to the suburbs to escape the crime-ridden quagmire Herenton created, and ensure that their children would have a chance at a decent education.  Now he is also fighting to incorporate the suburbs into the city of Memphis, without allowing the citizens of those suburbs to have a vote in the matter!  Should he succeed, I promise you will see the populations of Mississippi and Arkansas jump by several thousands within a few months.  Herenton does NOT deserve this honor. I have lived all over this country, as well as overseas, and Herenton is the absolute WORST mayor I have ever seen, met or heard of, including those in Panama, Romania and Brazil. DO NOT GIVE WILLIE THIS HONOR, IT WILL MAKE YOUR ORGANIZATION A LAUGHING STOCK AND DESTROY YOUR CREDIBILITY.

Before becoming disabled by a stroke, I taught 18 years in the City Schools.  So I saw first hand, the poverty in this city. I also understand where the school kids were out of hand and thus the forming of gangs... Let me explain.  The laws of our Nation as a whole have lead to this downward spiral, by saying that Parents Can't not touch their childern for what parents used to call misbehavior, and then handled it with a good spanking. NOT Abuse, but setting the invisible lines not to cross, by spanking the behinds of kids.  Now days with so many of the local families on Federal Assistance, IF, they touch their kids in any way and it's reported, Not only do they loose the assistance, but they are charged with crime, Abuse of Children.  The kids know this and gladly repeat it to their parents when they try to handle a situation. Their remarks to the parents are, " I'm going to call 911 on you!"

Now, I agree with all that I've read in this blog reguarding Willie..about the racist remarks, how he is not providing proper security for the city. The High rate of Taxation, The high rates of pay paid to his cronies, ( like his  personal office Personel making over a $100,000 a year. Which as a whole this city can't afford.

I've seen him take many things away from this City, Such as Libertyland, which employeed a  large Number of high school students every year. We all seen the Mistakes he and his Lawyers make on contracts, such as the Lease with the Grizzles, giving them the main say, in where anything is held in this city. The Major Mistake in the building of the Bus Garage at the new Forum, where we had to give that money back, to the federal Government becasue the garage wasn't build correctly. The building of the Forum, while we still owe Millions, on a building that is now sitting empty,  and with NO one using it, becasue of the rights of the basketball team say so on where events are held.

I gave $82,500 for my home 10 years ago,  which is sitting on a 60' by 140' lot. My taxes are right at $4,000 a year.  The High Utilities we pay for this area are simply stupid.  One of the reasons we pay them is becasue of the Million $ life policies we pay for the execs. of the city, such as director of MLGW and others.

In the city Charter, any money that is over and obove what it cost to run MLGW, is to be used to Lower our bills. Yet, every month we are charged higher and higher
for services.  Remember back last year when MLGW was wanting to sell their stakes in that business ( I forget.. if it was Radio, Televison or computer services )  that they had used our surpluses and invested in. That was Illegal for them to buy into start with.

I'm ashamed by the images, that most of the Black officials in this city have created. They should instead be Leaders that Reach out to the poverty stricken in this city,  leading  by Supreme examples of acheivement.. Thus creating images for the young in this city to strive for and achive. Instead most are leading by corruption, and placing the materials in their own pockets, and don't give a care about the poor images shown by them to the younger men and women who will one day lead this city. IF, at that time this city even exist.

I Beleive that the whole story of the young lady who was suppose to have set Willie up, that came to light during the elections, was totally a fabricated lie, becasue he was so far behind in the polls, and by telling it, he used the story to make the Black Voters of this city feel sorry for him and that the white man was out to get him..  IF, this story had been true.. I wonder if the young lady, who  said she was NOT paid for the set up would have went to him, Had she been paid.. Probablly not! she would have taken the money and not worried about Slick Wille.

There are many intelligent Blacks in this city, and many more coming up in the school systems. They will one day want a change in this city as they mature, becasue they are learing that there can be a better way.

One last point and I'm closing.. The reason MCS is receiving failing grades is not becasue of the teachers, ( while there are some who should not be teaching, becsue they are jsut there for the money, and not because of the love of kids and education.) But the real Reason the scores are so low, is because of the totally lack of parential involvement, by sitting down with the childen at night and going over their homework, and working with their chlldren at home.  Teachers can only do so much, in the 8 hours a day that they have them, then the parents, grandparents, or who ever is in charge of the chiild is NOT  taking the time at home to make sure that the child understands and Acheives well in education.

I am calling on all people who live in Shelby County,but outside the desolate wasteland of the city of Memphis.People of,Bartlett,Germantown,Millington,Lakeland,Arlington,Collierville,and the unincorperated areas,to please,PLEASE,stop spending your money in the city of Memphis.Spend it in your own towns,Thats ,gas,food,entertainment,and yes,that includes no Redbirds,no Grizzlies,no Fed Ex Forum.Please,don’t spend one single dime in Memphis.I know most of us work there,but we don’t have to spend there.It’s proven every day that we are not appreciated anyway.They need us a whole lot more than we need them.Give it several months,and I promise you the thug like attitude of the goverment of that wretched city will change.Just try it.You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Yolonda, Willie's getting voted back in is nothing.  Black people are the majority in Memphis, and they vote black even if they see the candidate doing a crime, just like you will vote Obama for president even with his muslim name and back ground, but he is black.  That is how your mind works.  If you would look at the high crime in Memphis,  the mayor's smart mouth, the people moving out of the city, you could see why people cannot believe he received this honor.  Why do you thing crime is so high now, the white's have moved out and left it to the majority, duh which your are one of.    How embarassing. It is always about race with the black community, but that is all the aces you have.

It's not about "hattin" as gmoney says (LOL I think it's hating or hatin'), it's about facts.  The mayor has been in charge for over a decade.  The city, for as long as Herenton has been in office, has declined from a once beautiful, southern city to a cesspool of crime, low income, undereducated children, crack houses and decay.  Please, I am still waiting for one of Herenton's staunch supporters (like gmoney) to please tell me what Herenton has done that is constructive for Memphis?

Those familiar with the 'current Hickory Hill' know that most of the good restaurants and upscale clothing stores left years ago. The restaurants (unless buffets) could not make it and the clothing stores were tired of being robbed.  I haven't shopped in Memphis in 2 years because a friend of mine went to the local grocery store and was literally beat to death by worthless thugs who carjacked him. Germantown and Collierville get my money and they will continue to.
