Jonesboro school shooter Mitchell Johnson is to be tried today, Monday, January 28, 2008, in Fayetteville on an unrelated federal weapons charge. Johnson and Andrew Golden fatally shot four students and a teacher at Westside Middle School in 1998.
Johnson, now 23, was arrested on New Year's Day in Washington County.
Deputies allegedly found two weapons while searching Johnson's vehicle after they said they also found an ounce of marijuana in his pocket. Johnson told authorities he and the other man in the vehicle, Justin Trammell, were moving to California. The two met while Trammell was serving a sentence for killing his father with a crossbow.
Johnson is charged with one federal count of possession of a firearm while either a user or addicted to a controlled substance. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a 250,000-dollar fine if convicted.
Investigators say his wife was at work at the time of the shooting.
