Gun Training in West Virginia Schools Being Considered

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia is considering offering gun training to children in school.

The move comes as the state watches its hunting population age, and sales of hunting permits drop, leaving a hole in the state budget.

Senator Billy Bailey has introduced a bill that would provide hunting instruction to 7th, 8th and 9th graders, with topics ranging from survival skills to gun safety. Children as young as 10 are already eligible for hunting licenses in the state.

Bailey doesn't envision kids firing real guns during class time. Guns would have dummy ammunition or be disabled.

Bailey says the training would also properly teach children that there are consequences to gun use.

One gun violence prevention group says its primary concern is children with unauthorized access to guns, and that it doesn't have a problem with supervised training programs.

It's not fair. As soon as this situation with the children being trained to use guns as sport backfires there's a good chance that the West Va Gov. will not be blamed. This is an accident like Columbine waiting to happen. Just because someone makes something law doesn't automatically make it right, it does however anesthesize those involved to the consequences of such. Don't put a loaded gun in a child's hand no matter how lawful you attempt to make it. That's just plain old common sense.

First of all that second post is not mine........

The killers at Columbine bought their own guns rather had someone buy their guns.  Secondly nearly all children in Virgina and W.Virginia hunt being taught at young ages none of these kids have caused trouble.

The trend is kids that of irresponsible parents are mainly getting into trouble this not 100%, but I have never met a kid in my area with responsible parents and Pa Pa's  let their kids get in trouble.

To me this is unfounded most kids are at the gun range each weekend and no trouble so to me I am not worried in the least.

Even though it's not 100% if you were in this area you would know peace and quite.

The thought is good, but after the student has been "trained", who will be responsible for monitoring the trainee?  Maybe after "training" there won't be so many accidental hits at the gang reunions and the drive-by's.

I can't speak for the entire area, yet a friend of mine Kenny B. 60 yrs  old taught his grandchildren to shoot no problems in fact he said his grand daughter shot her first deer at 200 yds impressive for a 10 yr old.

Just remember Kip Kinkle the kid that wrestle the gun from his hand  was taught handgun safety the week prior to the shooting his quick reaction saved lives.

If only more kids were instilled with his moral courage and fortitude the world would definitely be a better place.
