People of the town of Collierville, you need to read this and take heed.
I am a ham radio operator and a trained weather spotter.I have police scanners, weather radios. In other words, when a storm is coming I know well in advance. There is a very dangerous problem with the town of Collierville and the weather sirens.I'm going to attempt to explain the best I can.Keep in mind all the sirens in Shelby County are radio controlled no matter what jurisdiction controls them. That means it can be heard over police scanners. It's just basic radio frequencies.
There is a Memphis and Shelby County EMA office that controls the sirens in Memphis, and unincorporated Shelby County.
Collierville controls their own sirens. Also,It doesn't matter what part of Shelby County a tornado is sighted in ,the policy is that all sirens in Shelby County are turned on.On the tornado outbreak on Tuesday,2-5-08,I had all radios tuned in.When my weather radio alerted me about a tornado warning in Shelby County I immediately heard Memphis EMA turning on all their sirens. In Collierville 7 minutes went by.That caught my attention.A couple of hours later another tornado warning for Shelby County. This time it took 5 minutes for the sirens to come on in Collierville. Then after night fall the third tornado warning.Ifter 6 minutes I called Collierville PD dispatch and demaned to know why those sirens weren't on.The supervisor told me they have to call the Collierville EMA director to get permission to turn on the sirens. Finally after 11 minutes they came on,Why can't the people in the dispatch office just turn the sirens on when they are alerted that a tornado warning has been issued? Are the people in Collierville dispatch that incompetent ?Or is this just an ego trip that the Collierville EMA director is on at the expense of the saftey of the citzens of Collierville ?I know for a fact at the EMA office in Memphis, there is no phone call made to ask permission to turn on their sirens. In Collierville maybe a little common sense should be the order of the day.

Concerned in Cville - Your post explains a question I had about what happened yesterday.  I was talking with my daughter on her cell phone as she was trying to get home from work from Southaven. She was at Collierville Town Square, hystrical because she was witnessing the wall cloud and a tornado moving towards Germantown that eventually hit Hickory Hill.  My concern at the time was, as I was speaking to her, there were no sirens activated in C'ville. Per weather reports, the tornado  warning for Shelby County was in effect. I can't say how many minutes lag time there was because I was too upset to think of checking the clock. The sirens in  C'ville were activated minutes later but they should have been on when I was talking with my daughter as the tornado passed over.  I agree something needs 'fixing' in Collierville because any 'lag time' on sounding the tornado sirens could result in deadly consequences.

When DSC said they asked their employees to fly the U. S. Flag at half mast, correctly said it should be "half Staff", half mast is for ships at sea. But to suggest they fly the flag for 30 days at half mast is a disrespect to what the Flag  represents.

Only the President of the United States is given that respect. Show respect for the Flag it deserves and read the laws:

Those people that have died it is truly regrettable and all life and loss thereof is
truly a great tragedy and pray they all knew the Lord and are with HIM now.

Just in time for President Bush's visit!!! Maybe it's their welcome dance or something.

If the thugs/thieves would spend their energy helping to clean up and restore things, think how much faster people's lives could get back to "normal." Instead, let's prey on those who have already suffered. Kick them while they're down.

Sick.

If what I heard was correct and Willie told Governor Bredesen there was no need to come to Memphis...maybe this explains why. Looting! (like stealing in that area is uncommon).

Yeah Willie is a spineless uncaring piece of ***. When the rapture takes place and
all the Christ believing Christians are gone this sort of looting will be going on all over the world. Willie will be right here watching thugs looting his big ol' house
and I hope he is stupid enough to confront them. They'll shoot his *** dead.

I believe a lot less watching them steal and a lot more action by MPD could solve that looting problem. Of course then we would hear..........the cop just shot him!!!
