Speak Up! Memphis

Teen Brings Gun to Lester Elementary School

Memphis Police say a 14 year-old Lester Elementary student was arrested Wednesday morning, February 13, 2008, and charged with carrying a weapon on school property.

School administrators conducted a random security check and found the gun, which was unloaded, in the student's backpack.

Classes will continue Wednesday at Lester Elementary as scheduled and the school will not be placed on lockdown. School administrators say they will send a letter home to parents informing them of the incident.

This incident comes two days after a student was shot three times Monday, February 11, at Mitchell High School. 19 year-old Stacey Kiser is in critical condition and the accused shooter, 17 year-old Cornelius Cheers, is charged with attempted murder.

On Monday, February 4, a Hamilton High School student was shot in the leg by another student and in October 2007, a Manassas High School student was shot accidentally. Another student was taking a gun out of his backpack to show his friend and it went off.

What do you think about the recent school violence? It's your turn to Speak Up! Memphis.

I hate to say this, but until the child of someone high up in Memphis government or society is shot by someone in a school, nothing will be done.  This is just like that Tamara Mitchell Ford thing, how many accidents does she get to have before it is taken care of?

mnshadow you're right..it will have to hit home to one of them before they feel it's important. The problem remains....teachers are there to teach...schools are there for children to go to in order to get an education. The parents of these children buying and carrying guns need to be blamed...and held accountable.

This is the link for one of the most interesting speaches I have ever read.  It's Bill Cosby speaking at the 50th anniversary of Brown Vs. The Board of Education.  He sure makes valid points.  Too bad the people who need to listen aren't!

amen@mnshadow, wait till a teen is shot in a catholic school, or shot at MUS, or at houston or at collierville, the city will not take care of anything unless it happens to one of their own,

Corey- I don't understand what you meant.

Catholic school- tuition paid.
MUS- UM School, not city
Houston/Collierville- county schools

None of those under city control. So, how/shy do they have to take care of the city schools problems?

@catgirl it has nothing to do who is over it, im just saying that guns and troubled kids in school will not be addressed until it happens to one of those schools i listed above.

Corey- Okay, but it still seems like apples/oranges to me for some reason. Because the people with control over those schools are not the same as the ones with control over city schools. That's what I don't understand...

Dover and Shadow- I've been added to Gmoney's list...

A margarita would damn near hit the spot right now. It might help get rid of this raging headache I have.

But, alas, it is not to be at the moment.

In the meantime, Happy Valentines Day to all, including you too, GMoney.
