Speak Up! Memphis

Bar Owner Posts Sign With N-Word to Keep Gang Members Away

A Texas bar owner, who is African American, is under fire for posting a sign outside his Fort Worth business that has the n-word in big, red letters. He says he wants to keep gang members away from his bar.

Several people in the area want the sign to come down, because they say it is offensive.

The sign reads, "No Gangbanging allowed at Pop's Place, my n-----. Save the Children, my n-----."

The owner of the bar, who goes by "Pops,"  says he can only keep the sign up for thirty days, then he will have to take it down. He says he plans to put up another sign afterward that will say, "Quit getting drunk, my n-----."

What do you think? It's your turn to Speak Up! Memphis.

When the word is no longer okay for anyone to use, I will understand the offense taken.  Until then...I'd guess this falls under freedom of speech.

I think it falls under freedom of speech too, rather than a hate crime, considering the source of the sign.

That is not to say that I don't understand that it does not offend some, but, then again, I hear it all the time on black comedian shows too, and everyone laughs.

So, now that I think about it, that's confusing- we need a general consensus. Is it offensive or funny?

Cat - I'm glad you see the conflict too. When many blacks use  the "n" word that's fine.  It’s widely acceptable in rap and hip hop. The flip side is, it’s not acceptable if a white rapper says it, it’s not acceptable on TV, in the movies and especially not acceptable if said by the ‘white’ general public. The double standard will never work.  Either it’s acceptable or it’s not!

Hey- remember on the show "The Jeffersons" when George always called white folks "***?" I always thought that was funny- in fact, I still laugh when I hear it.

I was only 8 when that show came out, so I don't remember if there was an uproar about the use of that word.

To moderator of this blog- sorry for spelling that word out- totally innocent mistake. Thanks for censoring it.

Cat - I didn't watch that show too much so I don't remember. I'm a firm believer in... if someone is offended by something done or said, they should not do it or say it themselves ;-)

What ever happen to stick and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.  Why is this world so sensitive???  I think if it is used in a bad manner then it should not be accepted but otherwise its just a word everyone needs to quit crying so much!!!

Catgirl said:

You know, this whole "P.C." movement has gotten completely out of hand. If we have to worry about saying stuff that won't offend ANYONE, pretty soon we'll all be afraid to say ANYTHING...

When did people become so overly freakin' sensitive? Sheesh. And, no, I'm not talking about the "n" word. I do appreciate that it is found offensive to the vast majority, most of the time. I'm talking about words in general.

Amen to that.......and sometimes I come across as abrupt.....don't always mean to do that.  Someone sent me this one time.....makes sense in a broad and sweeping way about any words that offend, doesn't it?

Which is more irrational:
The man who believes in a God he can't see
OR
The man who is offended by a God he doesn't believe in???

Shadow- I've never noticed you coming across as abrupt, so no worries, mate.

I know my answer that question, btw...

And... Saturday night don't be afraid to voice your opinions! (you too Dover)

The banning of Mrwhitey,
Just as Mrwhitey said hours ago this sight is ran by left leaning liberals and if you don't see it their way then you hit the highway.A friend of mine reminded me that this is a private site and they have the right to do what they want. That is fine , but it still amounts to racial censorship. Thats the reason why THE RANT on WREG.com is number one in Memphis. Everyone over there has a say. Mrwhitey was here to give his opinion on things just as everyone else. Mrwhitey told the truth and some people couldn't take it and they hid behind certain things, oh , like lets say religion . Oh they complained. Well white people BEWARE. The liberal B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T you hear so much about is alive and well at WPTY. It blows chuncks. Mrwhitey bids you F.u,c'k;ing farewell.

I think he (the bar owner) is real stupid for that. Not for using the "n" word (that's his prerogative) but thinking that it would keep gangbangers away from his store!! Oh, he's just asking for it!!! I've got a feeling that there's gonna be a story on the news next week about a bar being either robbed, trashed, or burned down. mark my words.......

if most black people can go out and call each other the "N" word and use the word in every other sentence, then whats the big deal? why can one say it and another can't?  i personally think this is hilarious however like prettylady said, something will soon happen to this place

Bye mrswhitey go crawl back into your hole with mrwhitey. And no citysucs whites should not use the n word because whites use it as an insult. ignorant whites invented this word as an insult.

mnshadow53 said:

In truth. *** was not originally meant as a slur to black people.  ***, in the dictionary, is said to be:

"Extremely Disparaging and Offensive. a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc., a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks; a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised."

I wouldn't consider *** any more insulting than ***, cracker, ***, wop, mick, jerry, ***,  etc, etc.

Shadow- I'm amused at the words the censor did/did not allow through...

You'll have to tell me what the words were that did NOT make it through censoring... I also DO see a pattern for the ones that DID...

Hey Catgirl....I think the words that did not make it through were:

h*o*n*k*e*y,
k*r*a*u*t

interesting pattern........
