Speak Up! Memphis

Structural Changes May Cause Safety Problems in Pyramid's Future

Any alterations to the structure of the Pyramid in downtown Memphis may cause safety issues, according to seismic testing results.

Former Memphis City Council Chairperson and architect Tom Marshall says a seismologist tested the Pyramid's structure and found if the Pyramid is altered in any way, questions of safety will need to be addressed.

Marshall says the Pyramid is safe if left as is, however, with proposals for the Pyramid's future, such as that of Bass Pro and the Ericson plan to turn the Pyramid into an entertainment complex and amusement park, the structure of the Pyramid will be one more thing city leaders will need to consider before making a final decision.

What do you think? It's your turn to Speak Up! Memphis.

What a white elephant!  Now before any of you jump on me for a racist statement, a white elephant is defined as a supposedly valuable possession whose upkeep exceeds its usefulness, and it is therefore a liability. The term derives from the sacred white elephants kept by traditional Southeast Asian monarchs in Burma, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. ...wikipedia.org/wiki/White elephant

Well, this is just stupid. Either let it go to Basspro or not, everyone is tired of the cities indecisive behavior. I see this as another deboggle of the HARRINGTON leadership that the citizens of memphis must love to keep enduring.

The banning of Mrwhitey,
Just as Mrwhitey said hours ago this sight is ran by left leaning liberals and if you don't see it their way then you hit the highway.A friend of mine reminded me that this is a private site and they have the right to do what they want. That is fine , but it still amounts to racial censorship. Thats the reason why THE RANT on WREG.com is number one in Memphis. Everyone over there has a say. Mrwhitey was here to give his opinion on things just as everyone else. Mrwhitey told the truth and some people couldn't take it and they hid behind certain things, oh , like lets say religion . Oh they complained. Well white people BEWARE. The liberal B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T you hear so much about is alive and well at WPTY. It blows chuncks. Mrwhitey bids you F.u,c'k;ing farewell.

I can't believe this. Mayor Herenton needs to spend some more of the cities money to make it structurally suitable for the amusement park get the amusement park running and it will make that money right back. It makes common sense. The city will get the money back alot quicker that way instead of the Bass Pro Shop idea. speak up Memphis let your voice be heard.

Good morning shadow!!
I wasn’t going to comment on this worn out subject. The pyramid was a waste from the very beginning. I am glad you covered yourself with the explanation of a 'white elephant'. No doubt, some would have jumped on that and considered it a racist remark.

Anyone recall the M*A*S*H episode where they served liver and onions for many consecutive days? Hawkeye threw a fit and danced around the mess tent chanting, "we want something else, we want something else..."

Well, Mr. or Ms. Blog Moderator- WE WANT SOMETHING ELSE!

There are tons of things on the Commercial Appeal website that would provide good topics of discussion for us. PLEASE- put something new on here.

How about Wharton's plan for making parents responsible?
How about both mayor's threat to increase our property tax next year?
How about something fun, like asking for Tiger/Vol jokes?

Hey Cat and Shadow!

Cat, I have cried many tears about  that place. I still cry but at some point, people have got to start getting angry  and demanding things change or they never will.

Yes Saturday for sure! After today, I'm counting on those margaritas!

One thing I can say is I hope they do something with the Pyramid soon because it's just collecting dust just sitting there.  I know I don't live in Memphis but if I had any say so I would just find some type of way to change it into a entertainment complex and amusement park.  One reason why I say that is because since Liberty Land closed there's really nothing for the youth of Memphis and surrounding areas to do during the summer.  I also feel like if they did turn it into a entertainment complex and amusement park then that would put Memphis on the map for having something positive other than having a high crime rate and having one of the worst NBA basketball team.  This way more money will come to Memphis and not to other amusement parks that's hours away from Memphis becasue me personaly I   don't have the money to go out of town to a amusement park all the time like I really want.  If we had one here in Memphis again I will spend my money there.
