Teen Accused of Killing Cop Now Charged in Another Murder

The 18 year-old accused of killing Memphis Police Lieutenant Ed Vidulich is now charged in the October 2007 murder of an elderly man.

Police say Dexter Cox is charged for the death of 76 year-old Herbert Wooten, who was killed outside his home in the 1800 block of Pinedale. Investigators say around 6:00 p.m., October 25, 2007, officers were called to the home and upon arrival, found Wooten lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. Officers say they also found Wooten's 54 year-old wife inside, who had also been shot.

Herbert Wooten died at the scene and Mrs. Wooten was treated at an area hospital for several days.

Cox is already behind bars, charged with Lt. Vidulich's murder. He now faces first degree murder charges in the death of Herbert Wooten.

Below are details on the charges from Memphis Police:

"...On October 25, 2007, Mr. Herbert Wooten was sitting on the front porch of his residence at 1812 Pinedale when a male approached Mr. Wooten and spoke with Mr. Wooten about a treadmill that Mr. Wooten had for sale. Mr. Wooten’s wife Barbara was inskle 1812 Pinedale and was present when Mr. Wooten and the male had the discussion about the sale of the treadmill. The male told Mr. Wooten he wanted to purchase the treadmill. The male left 1812 Pinedale and returned approximately five minutes later. The male produced a semiautomatic handgun and shot Herbert Wooten several times while Mr. Wooten was sitting on the front porch of his residence. Upon hearing the gunfire, Barbara Wooten went to the front door and was shot through the door when she went to check on Mr. Wooten. After Mr. Wooten was shot, the gunman took a 9mm handgun which was strapped in a holster and attached to Herbert Wooten’s waist. Herbert Wooten had a permit to carry the 9mm handgun that was stolen from him. Herbert Wooten was pronounced dead at 1812 Pinedale. Barbara Wooten was transported to the Med in critical condition. Mrs. Wooten underwent emergency surgery and was hospitalized for several days. The Shelby County Medical Examiner’s office ruled the death of Herbert Wooten a criminal homicide due to the gunshot wounds he suffered on October 25, 2007.

Dexter Cox was developed as a suspect in the homicide of Herbert Wooten after he was questioned regarding the homicide of Edward Vidulich. Dexter Cox was advised of his rights and gave a statement of admission to Lt. T. Armstrong and Det. P. Sherman that he shot Herbert Wooten after he spoke with Mr. Wooten about purchasing the treadmill that Herbert Wooten was selling. Dexter Cox admitted he took a 9mm handgun from Herbert Wooten after Mr. Wooten was shot. Further, Dexter Cox admitted he shot Barbara Wooten when she came to the door to check on Mr. Wooten.

Barbara Wooten was shown a photo spread and was able to positively identify Dexter Cox as the person that shot her and shot and killed Herbert Wooten on October 25, 2007."

Memphis is quickly becoming overridden with self-indulgent, angry, half-wits who won't make their own way in this world within the law and want to steal from and kill those who do.  I don't know what this kid's story is and I don't care.  All I know is that Mr. Wooten couldn't have done anything to this kid to deserve being killed, other than to have something the idiot wanted and didn't want to WORK to get on his own. I want to get out of this town so badly, but, where is there to go to get away from these violent morons? Nowhere.

Am I the only person in Memphis who thinks that this whole story is a little one sided? it's beginning to look like a scene from 16 Blocks..........wait ,let me rephrase that. From the beginning of this untimely murder of a cop, I wondered why a cop would trust a stranger into his home(there was no sign of forced entry) and then not be on guard enough to let some kid murder him. The information that was leaked from the blogger guy Thaddeus Matthews stated that the boy had illegal dealings with this person and he was shooting out of fear and self defense. Now, the person who leaked that info is being hunted while this kid has every unsolved murder that no one has cared about in the past 50 years blamed on him.  Now, dont get me wrong, I despise the senseless crimes that these young criminals commit daily with no regards to human life just as much as the next person. I dont understand why it happens so frequently. It's like the court system in this county is a joke. But, if someone is being framed to cover up a potential crooked situation, that should be evaluated also. If the boy is truly guilty, which we will never know, I apologize. He definitely killed a cop, this is plain to see. But, are there some more members involved in a dirty scheme that he been pushed under the rug as part of the good ol' boy system and is this kid is being punished for getting involved with powers higher than himself?

Tired- okay, killing the policeman aside. How do you explain his killing an old man who was just trying to sell a treadmill and his old wife who just came to the door to see what was going on?

That's REALLY brave. What's your excuse for his behavior regarding that one?

<Ahem>  Tiredof excuses,   I’ve seen exaggeration before but you’re taken it to another level.  I haven’t read any article that says  Dexter Cox is accused of all murders that no one cared about over the past 50 years.   He has been accused of 2 and possibly a 3rd!  While you feel he may be a 'victim' of injustice the facts are, he killed an elderly man in 2007. He confessed to killing Ed Vidulich.   That’s two murders too many! I'll save my sympathy and concern for his victims and their family.

Like I said , Maybe I'm the only one who sees a bigger picture here. For every one whose family has suffered, my heart does go out. I thought I made that clear that murder is never ok. But,  I dont think he's the only guilty party here. And I guess since you all were present for all two possibly three murders that he clearly commited all of a sudden, then case closed...................

So in the case of Mr. and Mrs. Wooten, exactly WHO ELSE was guilty? Who made poor little Dexter shoot those innocent elderly people for no apparent reason?

@ Tired.....if you are embracing a "conspiracy theory," please fill us in!  Now you make a valid point about Lt. Vidulich's murder in that it does sound fishy that this big, tough, experienced cop could be overtaken with no apparent show of forced entry or the house being in disarray.  I am curious about that too!  But, if Dexter did kill that elderly man and shoot his wife, that didn't take much on his part to pull it off.  So, if Dexter did not act alone, who else helped?

People here will attack you for that.  Unfortunately when the OCU stepped in at the decree of the director and knocked homicide (MPD homicide - the entire country knows works) out - you wonder.  However I have no doubt this boy killed the people he is charged with.  Whatever else was going on - who was involved in the circle of swingers - well I would say that is none of our business - PROBABLY.  I still would have liked to have seen homicide handle this all the way through.

OCU - who knows what is going on there - they seem to produce but how hard is that in this city?  Why is it only the Feds who produce any city officials?

This stinks but I am sure this kid is guilty of both.  His juvy record is supposedly unbelievable.

Good job,mnshadow53 ! I see you guys can think individually and not as a group.... My point exactly, the whole thing looks fishy. Why couldnt we get to this point earlier? As far as the other crimes, I simply feel like maybe he stepped in quicksand by shooting the police officer regardless of what was going on and now if there isnt a suspect for the crimes, they've got one now......It's like the boy who cried wolf. He obviously isnt an angel but what if he's not guilty of all these crimes they're he's gonna be tried for? Why is it that a cop had to be killed for the book to be thrown at him? There is a murder every day in Memphis and most of these thugs walk free. Hell, accuse all of them of at least three murders, not just this one. And, East Memphis, " This stinks"? I guess we're both going down. I think that by you walking around your words you agree it looks or smells funny, you just dont have the guts to come out and say it. It's the kid's own fault for doing whatever dirt he did to end up in this situation. Everyone needs to be accountable for their own actions. But, I do happen to know when you mess with certain higher authorities, they can make sure you never see the light of day, by any means necessary...
