Eyewitness News Everywhere uncovers a shakedown at a Memphis high school.
An Eyewitness News Everywhere employee witnessed several classes at Wooddale High School interrupted Wednesday, February 27, 2008 when officers went into the classrooms and told all the students to come out into the hallway.
Officers used handheld metal detectors on each student searching for weapons. When asked what was happening, the principal said it was a "shakedown". Some students told Eyewitness News Everywhere that they were also "patted down" by officers and made to empty their pockets.
School security has been a hot-button issue since two students were shot within a week at two different high schools. Both students are recovering and both shooters were arrested. Shortly after the shootings, a student at a Memphis elementary school brought a gun onto school property.
Mayor Willie Herenton called for better security in schools, stating that new security equipment would be purchased, as well as 67 new officers stationed at certain high and middle schools.
