Pregnant Woman Shot in Head by 15 Year-Old Boy

Newbern, TN - Newbern police say a 20 year-old woman and her unborn child were killed by a 15 year-old boy during what police are calling a “stupid and senseless” act.

Police say it all started around 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 27, 2008, when some women from Ripley were arguing with some women from Newbern.  According to investigators, the Newbern girls did not like one of the girls from Ripley.  At some point during the argument a Ripley boy, who was dating of one of the Newbern girls, called for reinforcements from Ripley.

The groups broke up and then met again around 8:58 p.m., after the Ripley reinforcements arrived, according to investigators.  Police say the two groups started arguing again and that is when three boys from Ripley pulled guns.  Police say 20 year-old Tamara Brown, who was seven months pregnant, tried to hit a 15 year-old Ripley boy with a baseball bat when he shot her in the head, killing her and the unborn baby.

Police say the group started to scatter after the shooting and the three armed Ripley boys started to randomly fire their guns while the crowd was running away.  According to police, a 40 year-old man was shot in the hip and another man was grazed by a bullet during the gun fire.

Police say the Ripley boys then ran away, leaving their cars at the scene.

Investigators from the Newbern Police Department, Ripley Police Department, and the Dyer County Sheriff’s Department, are now searching for four men ranging in age from 15 to 40 years old:

  • Darnell Madison
  • Colton Whitlow
  • Justin Vees
  • The 15 year-old boy accused of shooting Tamara Brown (Police would not release his name because of his age.)

A friend of 20 year-old Tamara Brown says she was taken to the hospital where doctors tried to save the unborn baby boy.

Newbern Police Chief Harold Dunivant says he will ask the District Attorney’s Office for two counts of murder in this case; one count for the death of Tamara Brown and one count for the death of her unborn baby boy.

Let's see....we have two groups of women arguing with each other.  Then we get a boy dating a girl from one group of women to "call for reinforcements."  Then the reinforcements arrive and the pregnant woman swings a baseball bat at one of them.  Then a guy from this group shoots her.  Lord have mercy!  What were these fools arguing about that was important enough for a pregnant woman to be weiding a baseball bat, endangering herself and her baby?  And what could possibly have been important enough for shooting to start?  Come on people and parents....take stock!  These are the fools that we are expecting to run the country when we are too old to do it!  That secluded island is looking better all the time!

How sad. What the heck is wrong with these folks? There is more to life then all this drama, and violence! Young folks need to wake up and smell the dang roses and stop this violence, what if that was your sister, aunt? Just b/c some people have disagreements with each other does not warrant the idea to grab a gun and start shooting that is the most uneducated decision you can make. Now this 15 year old can kiss his butt goodbye b/c he will probably be charged as an adult and that means going to the big house for the rest of your life all b/c of a stupid choice you made over what a girl??? How sad!! My prayers go to this young womans family on the double loss they are having to deal with.

This may be a problem solving itself (except for the poor child).  This group violence thing is what freaks me out the most.  At the mid south fair a few years ago I was in the middle of two "families" when some disagreement broke out.  One of the "families" 12 or 13 y/o boys was stomping all over everones kids in this climbing thingy.  I went in to get my 3 y/o daughter out (the appropriate age for the ride) when all he!! broke loose and it grew and grew.  There were 15 people throwing fists before I got my child the he!! out of there.  She caught an elbow from one of the moms!!!!! All over one parent telling another to get his overage kid off everyone elses kid.

Two young boys (about 5 y/o) blocked off the young kids, including my daughter from the melee.  They were more adult than the parents (mean age ~19 or 20).

Good bye Mid South Fair!!

I think the only real victim here was the unborn baby. I wonder what kind of life he/she would have had. The mom  was 20, pregnant for the second time,  and outdoors swinging a bat at a 15 year old who was obviously not there for friendly chat.

I don't think she/he was trying to be funny.  It's pitiful.

It's all about the Ree baby.  DisREspect kills. The Newberry tribe disrespected the Ripley tribe or visa versa.

What happened to screw y'all and doing something else?  I mean as a teenager the fun things to do have no end - go get drunk - get laid - play a video game - go to work -  play baseball - watch TV - flirt - something - anything.  I really don't get it.

I can't comprehend it.  At fifteen someone argues with someone I know - miles away - I get a gun (I had access to dozens at that age and knew how to use them - never felt the need to do it) make my way miles away and SHOOT A PREGNANT GIRL?!?!?

Lucas McCain and Sergeant Striker would have kicked my punk @$$.

I wasn't trying to be funny, nor did I really think Dover was either.  I was sadly chuckling at the irony of it.  Believe me, I don't think the death of a 20 year old woman and her unborn child are at all funny.  Nor do I think the ruined life of a 15 year old boy is funny either!  My "LOL" was sarcastic and sad at the same time.  I am sure most people could understand that.  Sorry I needed to explain or justify my comment.

East Memphis -  Shadow would never laugh at this type incident…..but instead, at how ridiculous this situation was. A 20 year old pregnant woman out swinging a bat at a 15 year old boy is not even uncommon anymore. Like so many deaths we read of lately, this should never have happened. Btw…I’m female and I fully agree, these children/teens should be doing one of the many things you listed. Instead they are choosing to get guns and commit murder. It’s beyond understanding.

Cat - I don’t know what’s gone so wrong in society. I think statistics show, street crimes and gang related problems  are with children  that have parents that do not supervise. Parents who do not care to be consistent in raising their children,  and who refuse to teach  morals or respect.  Theses children seem to care for nothing or no one. On the other end of the parenting spectrum, there are parents who believe if they spank their child or discipline them, as parents used to, they break the child’s spirit. These children grow up thinking they do not have to be responsible for their bad actions/choices. These are the children that seem to commit the mass crimes like school and university shootings.

Anyone in my age bracket, (lol old) can say, as teens, we didn’t see this type of crime that happens  almost daily.   If we got out of line, our parents were watcing, they didn’t spare the rod or discipline, and we knew we would be accountable for anything we did! Those were days when you could go to school, shop, LIVE without fear of being killed for what you have in your wallet.

First off let me say that I somewhat understand what you are saying...NO the parents didnt make him kill anyone and no they didnt put the gun in the kids hand..and yes its common sense that you dont kill people..however....they are the parents and they did raise him!!!  You dont kill do you??  Im sure you dont....and you didnt raise yourself...im sure your parents or guardians taught you better than that....which is what his parents should have done as well!!!!  Parents need to be more pro active in their childrens lives....no you cant keep watch on them 24/7 but know where your kids are...know who they hang with.... and what they are doing!!!!  I was raised by a single mother who worked two jobs but that didnt stop her from being a mother!!!!

Ninney- to not hold parents responsible for the actions of their 15 year old child is stupid. Of course they are responsible. They brought the child into this world, and it is there responsibility to know where they are, what they are doing, and to correct them when they do wrong.

You can't put this off on anyone else. The only way I'll agree to "help" you with your child is if I can feel free to correct their bad behavior without fear of you (meant collectively) going all "postal" on me and saying crap like, "YOU don't tell MY child what to do." Until that day comes? He's YOURS, punkin. You wanted him, you've got him. And you ARE responsible.

mnshadow53 said:

Ninney...if you consider a 15 year old a "child," then he is the responsibility of his parents.  Unless he is legally emancipated, his actions are his parents' problem.  I think some of the problems now absolutely stem from parents abdicating their responsibility and authority as adults and parents.  Let's let a few parents cool their jets in jail, along with these kids, and see if maybe that will force some change!

Catgirl said:

They abdicate their responsibility and authority until the little thugs get caught/punished. Then, they don't want anyone to do anything to their "innocent" little children. BUT... they want someone to take care of violence in schools, but don't touch my little child, but then....

and it goes round and round, spinning out of control.

Either you are responsible or you are not. Can't have it both ways.

Rapper Juvenile's Daughter Killed in Ga.
March 1, 2008, 12:15 PM EST
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the fatal shootings of his mother and her two little girls, one of whom was rap star Juvenile's 4-year-old daughter.

Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr. was charged Friday in the deaths at the family home near Lawrenceville, where the bodies were found the night before, said police spokeswoman Illana Spellman.

She identified the victims as Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy Joy Deleston, 39, and her two daughters, Micaiah, 11, and Jelani, 4. The motive was still unclear.

Deleston brought a paternity lawsuit in 2004, claiming that the 32-year-old rap star Juvenile, whose real name is Terius Gray, was Jelani's father, Gwinnett County court records show.

Attorney Randy Kessler, who represented Juvenile in the proceedings, said the case was resolved peacefully by consent order in 2006. Both parties agreed Juvenile was the father.

Kessler said Saturday he had not talked with the rapper about the killings. "Anytime you have a situation like that, it's shocking," Kessler said.

Terrell was taken to jail in neighboring DeKalb County to avoid any potential conflict because Deleston worked for Gwinnett County, Spellman said. He is being held without bail.

Because of his age, prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty against Terrell. A preliminary hearing will be set next week in Gwinnett County Superior Court, said prosecutor Danny Porter.
