Midtowners Fight Expansion of Memphis Zoo

A patch of ground that was cleared of trees, as the Memphis Zoo prepares to expand.Memphis, TN - On a recent walk through Overton Park, Midtowner Stacey Greenberg was shocked to see a giant patch of brown dirt where lovely trees once stood.

"I was in complete disbelief," says Greenberg, "You know, the zoo talks about conservation.  Yet here they are tearing down a 10,000 year-old forest."

The Memphis Zoo removed trees on a four acre piece of land to make way for a new exhibit.

Naomi Van Tol is equally upset about it.  So she and Greenberg teamed up to reform the group, "Citizens To Preserve Overton Park".   The original CPOP was founded in 1957 to fight a government proposal to extend Interstate-40 through Overton Park.  The group disbanded three decades later after the plan was eventually dropped.

The goal for the new CPOP is to raise awareness in the community about the Memphis Zoo's expansion projects.

"We just felt it was really unacceptable," Van Tol says of the trees that were bulldozed.  "The zoo didn't involve the public.  This is our park.  This is our forest.  And we feel the forest is too precious to be sacrificed for exhibits."

But Brian Carter, a spokesperson for the zoo, says all of their expansion plans, including this latest one, have been available to the public since the mid 1980's.

"This project has been part of the master plan for 20-years," says Carter.  "We feel as though the community has had ample opportunity to speak about our plans and the plans for Overton Park.  And we're always taking in comments by e-mail and phone."

Carter says the number of comments the zoo receives usually increases every time construction starts on a new exhibit.

Greenberg and Van Tol realize it's too late to save the four acres.   It's the 17 acres the zoo also owns around Rainbow Lake that they're worried about now.

"The number one thing I want," says Greenberg, "is for people to come out and see it.  If you've hiked the trails in the forest and you've seen all the trees, you can't argue that what's going on is wrong."

Carter says there are no development plans in place for the lake acreage.  He says the zoo's master plan has reserved the area for a minimal impact forest trail exhibit.

As for the exhibit currently under construction, it's called the Teton Trek.  It's located next to Northwest Passage and will feature elk, grizzlies, timberwolves and trumpeter swans when it opens in the summer of 2009.  Zoo leaders say the display will replicate the natural beauty of Yellowstone National Park.

It is your turn to Speak Up! Memphis on this story.

I'm sorry, I could care less about the zoo. I haven't been there since 1985. I got completely turned off when city officials caved once again to ,dare I say it, the black folk and changed the name from the Overton Park Zoo to the Memphis Zoo. Just like KFC , which used to mean Kentucky Fried Chicken, Fed Ex, used to mean Federal Express, they almost single handily changed McDonalds to Micky Ds' and Burger King to BK, but some powerful folk stepped in and said enough is enough. Wow, it must be nice to be part of 12.8% of the population and have so much power. Hell, the way things are going, you'll probably have your own president soon. OH HAPPY DAY !

BWaaaa Haaa Haaaa Haaaa 10,000 year old trees. How about 45 y/o homos

How much less gridlock would there be in this city if they cut the interstate through?  People might actually go downtown.  There might be more than the driver on the trolley.

The down side is all the homosexual men would have to go somewhere else to have anonymous sex in public.  Since midtown is littered with them it would be inconvenient to go to interstate rest areas like the rest of the country.

It looks like Obama has it locked up and with the Republicans running McManiac - Obama will win.  I just can't bring myself to pull the lever for McBackstabber.  He would be as big a disaster for the Pubbies as Clinton One was for the Dumocrats.

Shrillary only has the gays and a few democrat Neocons behind her

GWB tried to be as big a disaster for the Repubs but he couldn't pull it off short of starting a war that we will never finish.  He had the chance to reverse what Carter created (the modern Islamic terror state - Iran) and be the greatest president of the 21st century but he pussed out.

The only way Obama goes down as a sucess (besides the fact it will be TOTALLY HANDS OFF by the press) is if he gets America out of our parents empire we can't afford.

My children are going to pay the bill for the Great Generation's (translation all the 80 y/o codgers who created the individual/corporate/military-industrial/FederalReserve disaster) payout to themselves on my child's (and mine) future.

The Great Generation will be viewed in the distant future as the most selfish group of individuals who destroyed the hope America represented.

The trees are already gone, right? Protest or anger won't bring them back. Opportunity to have a world class zoo is critical to Memphis' reputation, which frankly needs every positive influence it can manage. The park in which the Zoo is located has become a place where citizens of Memphis no longer feel comfortable walking.  Construction of the interstate through the park seemed wrong but on retrospect might have been wiser.  Shelby Farms is the park families go to play. Please don't stop the progress to please a disguntled viewpoint. The new zoo attraction is a great addition.

Well I hiked the trails ONCE in the late 80's.  Saw the trail and said cool I will check this out.

It was my shocking intro to anonymous public homo sex - saw it, got propositioned. No decent person could take his kids down that trail. There is NO TELLING what he would have to explain.

You know - as a hetero - I see lots of women I think - WHOA - I would like to hit that.  But good God - I wouldn't walk down a trail and have sex with some anonymous woman who was also having sex with multiple anonymous men - NO MATTER HOW GOOD SHE LOOKED.  I don't understand it.

That area of Overton park is good for one thing and it isn't enjoying the woods for families and hetero couples.  It is a disgusting place for gays to have anonymous public sex period.  I think we should turn it into hourly motels - at least the city would get taxes from it.

Many people will not visit the zoo because of the location. The last time I was there, it was certainly nothing to brag about. It is going to take more than expansion for the Memphis Zoo to be worth risking your life to get into. The city needs to do away with MANY sub-human animals before they think of adding animals to the zoo!

NOTE to all CCW holders about the zoo - you can't carry there.

Unless it is a special event (Zoo-Boo) there is no real security.

Remember the group attack last summer, they never got caught as far as I know. They walked right out after attacking several people.  Of course, if you had used a weapon to defend yourself against the group attack, you might end up getting prosecuted.  You would have to figure out whether or not your life was in danger from the 4 or 5 people beating on you and convince others you were in reasonably in danger of your life.  (I think it should be obvious - but it is not.)

Does anyone know if they caught those punks?

We have long been concerned about our young people voting, now they are. Maybe we should have just left well alone. McCain won't get my vote either. I will vote my conscience and go with Chuck Baldwin from Florida. Check this out.

As far as the "Great Generation" backing Barrack Hussein Obama - that wasn't what I was talking about. The vast majority of the people who support Hussein wouldn't be able to tell you how he stands on ANY ISSUE.

I am just saying the "Great Generation" laid a big - steaming one on my child's plate to eat and retired off my child and me.  The true "Great Generation" was their parents who watched their children go off to war where losses in single battles equaled the entire losses in "wars" we have fought since then. (Though we haven't actually been in a declared "war" since WWII.)

The parents of the "great generation" also had the decency to declare war - like that Constitution thingy says we are supposed to.  But then again the "Great Generation" created schools that don't even teach what the Constitution is or how it is different from other governments and God Given to the people of this country.   They just shredded it by a blatant misreading of the commerce clause.

I have bookmarked his site.

You know why I don't want BO to win? 1. No experience. 2. Likelihood of getting assassinated higher than normal. That will cause riots the likes of which our country has never seen. As citizens of a big city, we will be greatly at risk if this occurs.

I think what happened to the "great generation" is that after all they went through they ended up raising tree-hugging, anti-war, criminals-rights, bleeding-heart liberals. When did the country start going down? When that generation and their children started to take control and win court cases that decided how you and I must treat the world and those that live in it. No offense to those in that age range, of course. However, it seems like they started the trend of "no one is a loser, and everyone wins" parenting. Kids need to get hurt so they can set up a clear standard of how to think properly and how to strive to acheive. If we hadn't been so concerned with making sure everyone was happy(hippies, flowerchildren, etc.) maybe we would be more concerned with things that really matter like not letting criminals and big companies have more rights than Joe Public.

Catgirl---Well said. I agree with you. As much as I hate to, I assume that you are of the female gender. I have learned in my days to always trust a lady's instinct. As cliche as that sounds, it has been proven too many times to ignore. I have made decisions based on how my wife feels about people and situations.
I agree with you on all of that. He does seem very questionable. I think he is tickling too many peoples fancies. Does it not seem that he always stops just short of jumping. I just think that he is a really good salesman. He waited for the right time, until people were in just the right mentality, to get into all this. He may have postions on everything, but I think he puts himself in the right place so that everyone will be happy.
Also, I'm not against saving trees and all that. I just think there are more important issues in Memphis than some trees. And if those trees really were that old, wouldn't they be a little bigger? Fight for something that will make a little bit bigger impact than 20 acres of trees. Older and much bigger areas of trees get cut down every day somewhere.

If your car is relatively new get it programed to alarm without locking the doors.  I used to sit in my house and watch thugs break into cars 150 ft away and your locks are not going to help.  At that time the police weren't helping either and after death threats to my 6 y/o daughter (boy I wish I had known my neighbors better then - I would have put an end to that situation right there!  If I had known everyone was on the same page it would have saved me many court appearances) and having my windows shot out etc my wife forced a move.

Locking your doors is a formality.  They have this center punch thingy (which you can buy at harbor freight for about 2 dollars, I found a couple they dropped) which will bust a window almost silently.  Just push it up against the window and poof the window falls in.  If you have most Fords, they can open most door locks with a large flat head screwdriver.  If you don't they can take the flathead stick it under the bead of the window and pop your window in one pull with very little noise.  I have watched them do it with the vehicle's owners 50 feet away.

I have watched dozens of break ins and have put several people in jail.  It is a cottage industry in some hoods.  They are fearless and fear no reprocussions.  Only one had any real reprocussions - the one that threatened my daughter - but that is a long unbelievable story that highlights how demoralized the MPD is and how out in the cold they will leave you.

Get an alarm that will function with the doors unlocked.  The window is not going to stop them regardless of what these moronic cop commercials say about locking your car! Limit your losses to what they can get out of your car.

And if you are one of these stupid women walkers - FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T PULL UP AND GET OUT OF YOUR CAR AND HIDE YOUR PURSE!!!!  Almost all women have purses - if they see you get out of the car without one, the minute you are out of sight they will bust in your car.

Oh try to deal with the police reporting these, 911 is a total joke, they wouldn't even respond when my daughter was threatened until I chased the person down myself and then they almost arrested me.

As far as calling and saying, "the Red Dodge Neon that I have seen break into 5 cars already is backing into a parking space next to a car and is going to break into - wait they are popping the window. Send a car."  20 minutes the fastest!  (Until I got two Lts. cell numbers.)

This is a stupid thing to protest about. I dont hear anyone protesting when they cut down trees to build homes & restaurants, so why complain about building a place for the animals to live, they have a life to you know. The money is not coming out of your pockets, And plus its a place where children can learn about animals, so why not expand the zoo, & if you dont like it, you can always move out of the state.

I'm actually someone who HATES for trees to be cut down. But, the trees are already gone. Again- make them stick to their promise to plant more when construction done. And, if the plans were public knowledge, which they probably were, and you're worried about the future? Go be nosy. Look at stuff now. Ignorance of the law is no excuse- and the same principle applies here.

Nvr- yep, I'm female. Women have had to learn to pay attention to our instincts. Sometimes it's what saves us from trouble. I believe that.

Well the zoo needs any help it can get. We were totally dissapointed on our first visit. Coming from a much smaller town, we thought the zoo would be a great place to take our grandson. Wrong. Smaller towns in the upper midwest have zoos that make the Memphis Zoo look like the petting zoo at the county fair.

Unless tey are going to clean it up why bother expanding it.

_________________________________________________________

I now live in the heart of East Memphis near White Station and Walnut Grove (Central Precinct).

I also used to live in the heart of East Memphis - north of Park and East of White Station, inside the loop (when the "drama" was occurring).

A beautiful neighborhood.  Just one problem - the walking trail - it attracted stupid sappy women who would leave their purses in their cars (and cell phones, computers, ipods, guns etc.) and get out and walk the trail to return to a pile of broken glass.  The stupid women attracted numerous thugs who waited for one of the sappy women to drive up and get out without her purse.

The neighbors with the exception of one (a musician!) simply didn't care about the ever growing element taking over the park.  He was all over it.

The neighborhood meeting were filled with excited talk of planting trees. You see - having nice trees, would create a nice atmosphere, which in turn would drive the criminals away, I was told.  Unfortunately I just couldn't enjoy the nice trees when my 6 y/o daughter' life was threatened because of my interference with the car break ins.

Believe me when I say that a considerable number of car break ins are gang related.   And they react to threats to their area.  HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED THE FUNNY SCRIBBLING ON STOP SIGNS AND OTHER STATIONARY OBJECTS.  THAT IS GANGS STAKING TERRITORY.  Try this - in your neighborhood - go behind the shopping centers and strip malls, look at the street signs.  Notice the tagging.  Some of it is simple  taggers - SOME IS NOT.  I STUPIDLY assumed it was a bunch of lowlife punks because I lived in a nice neighborhood.  That lot was claimed.

I was stupid enough to not want these people across the street from my house when I was coming and going and expected the police to back me up.  A few times getting my windows shot out and being threatened with absolutely NO police response and my wife drove us to move.

The police are all over the place now.  It is one of the best policed areas around thanks to them breaking up the East precinct.  When Hickory Hill was broken off.

The Old East precinct boundaries went from the Mississippi line up East of the airport to 240, down 240 to Getwell, Up Getwell to Park, out Park to Germantown, down Germantown Memphis border to the Shelby county Memphis Border back down to Mississippi.  I believe it was 64 square miles. It couldn't be policed without Hickory Hill drawing every car and leaving every other area without cars in their wards.

When I went in to complain about the total lack of response for about the third time - I got an honest Lt.

He told me,"Mr. East Memphis in the summer, after 10 a.m. in the morning I do not have a single car patrolling in any of the wards inside the 240 loop.  There is NO policing being done.  My entire force is REACTING to what is ongoing.  They are not POLICING. (There is a difference.) All of my officers are responding to priority calls and taking reports - we are talking priority calls - ongoing assaults, armed robberies, ongoing domestic violence  etc.  There are NO cars in your area.  That is why we can't respond to any calls."

Now that there is a Hickory Hill station broken off - the East precinct area is well policed though the crime is still higher than the Central precinct.

I wanted to move out in the country, my wife wanted the kids in St. Louis School.

I remembered what my grandfather said about a disagreement with my grandmother over which house to buy. He went ahead and bought the one he wanted.  He said he never spent a peaceful night in that house!

I feel like an idiot with another house in this city.  But now (Lester) my wife has come around - after the housing market has crashed and we dumped a ton of money in this house!  Well the market will come back - hopefully.

And yes it was drama - my wife was piling furniture against the doors at the peak of it.  And most of the saps in the neighborhood were blissfully unaware.  Well hopefully the policing will stop it.  My old house is beautiful.  If it doesn't it will become unlivable for civilized people.
