This is a real tragedy. The man who died in this crime was a wonderful person and a great friend to many. I hope that justice is not blinded by the fact that this cold blooded killer is not only an officer who apparently thinks himself to be above the law, but is also the son of a retired Shelby County official. Donald "DJ" Munsey, was someone's son, too. He was an innocent bystander who was trying to protect other innocent people from harm. He will be missed. Rest in peace DJ. We love you.

I will reserve judgment on whether he should have shot the persons until later - with 10 witnesses the facts WILL come out.  I have a sneaking suspicion he is going down.  He was evidently drinking in public and carrying a weapon.  That is akin to playing with gasoline and matches.

If he shot this guy because of an argument he had ANY part in escalating - 2cnd Degree Murder like the rest of us peons would get.

I think drinking and carrying a gun is a recipe for idiocy but I, as a concealed carry holder, ought to be able to go out to eat when I am not drinking alcohol and be able to protect myself when leaving a restaurant.  Just about every decent restaurant serves alcohol.

Hey East, I guess my point is that you are quick to point out race and/or culture when the blog is about someone of color, but totally do not mention it when it regards a white person.  I am not making any point other than that, and I really don't want to inflame or start another war with you.  I just don't see the point in making references to color and culture at all, unless you are across the board with it.  But then, this blog is about opinions, not necessarily about truth or fairness.  

Unfortunately my 22-yr old daughter was a victim of the 2005 statistics noted above.  It is very sad that our world today feels the need to clarify race and report statistics on it.  These victims were human beings...someone's loved ones.  The reports are saying that an argument started over a PARKING SPACE which spilled over into the resturant.  What a senseless act of violence!!!!  The fact that the killer was an off duty officer is deplorable!!  Everyone wonders why the communities rag so much on the officials of Memphis.  This is another example of how corrupt some of them can be....mind you, I said "SOME" of them.  I know it doesn't only exist in Memphis, but everywhere else too.  God bless the families of these victims.... they have a long road ahead of them.  I know....I'm still traveling it.

Now, with that said, in Memphis there is a huge problem in the black community and until people start addressing the 900lb. gorilla in the room, there are going to be continuing problems in Memphis. DrWhite has a good point. Actually, just now, sitting in my kitchen, writing on this blog, I heard about 8 gunshots that sounded like they were right outside our fence. I live, and grew up, in a black neighborhood, as I so frequently state. I see the problem. You people that act like there isn't a problem in the black community must not live in one. Oh, and that was the 9-10 night in a row that there has been gunshots at night. And just wait for next week! Spring break! Get ready for crime to shoot up for the week.

The Jena 6 thing got totally under my skin.  I think it is the modern day Klan in every way but the perps are black. Racial violence broadly supported by blacks.  They really think hanging a rope is a valid reason for violence - NATIONWIDE.  This was just one incident - the vast majority are unreported or ignored.  I don't hate blacks - I do hate black culture.  I admire the black culture of the 20s 30s 40s 50s.  There couldn't have been a more vicious attack on a culture and it stood strong, with families, and progress.  Now the black culture has broken in two - both incredibly angry at whitey. Both completely destroyed as far as a patriarchal society. Matriarchal societies  well look at civilization in Africa.

I will probably be slammed for this big time, but I heard Michael Baisden say, on his radio show the other day, "We cannot allow the white man to play the race card on us."  He was referring to politics and Barack Obama.  I am sorry, but blacks have been playing that race card for a  LONG TINE when it was to their benefit.  You can't play the race card and then whine about it when it is played right back at you!

mom of 2 - It's not the "few" that do - It is the many that vocally support violence and intimidation and the majority that sits around silently giving assent to that and criminal behavior by their silence.  

In our community we ostracise criminals and push them out.  We don't put them on WET (White Entertainment Television).  You will never find me supporting a "white" criminal or thug.   As far the thug deputy in this story goes - have fun in prison - I am sure the parking place was worth it.

If facts and statistics bother you, maybe you should find something else to do other than read the news and read blogs.

That's not a good comparison because most of us have very  busy lives but, we also care about the news and can deal with facts.  

To all of D.J and Stacies family and friends, i live in Paducah, Ky. i know one of thier best friends, and i say one because i am sure they had many. I met D.J and Stacie when i came to visit memphis with their friend, we went straight to their home where we stayed.  These people did not know me from Adam, they open their home up to me and made me feel welcome.  While i was there i met a neighbor of theirs who told me a story of cold winters night when D.J and Stacie got off work in the wee morning hrs. when they passed her home they seen her front porch on fire, D.J and Stacie knowing the womens mother was on oxygen, feard that their home would had exploded. D.J and Stacie pulled their car over and did not hesitate to get the family awake and out safely.  So the Wing Jammer was not the first time D.J  saved someones life.  these people seemed to be decent people who did not have much, but would share or do anything to go out of their way to help anyone no matter the cost would be.  I believe that D.J would not want everyone to dwell on the event that took his life, but to keep his spirit alive, for his legacy will be kept alive.  Through his children and Chris Jones his fate lies lies in the hands of our lord.

mrbrk---I was just wondering to myself the other day, I said, "Self, who is the most racist person in Memphis? And who is it that just continues to prove points that whitey makes?"  Then it came to me! Its mrbrk! What would racism do without him? It would solely have to rely on Al and Jesse. Stacie and D.J. were really good friends of mine for a long time...our kids played and lived across the street from each other for several years. I saw Stacie just the other day and she and the whole family are just trying to make it one day at a time. The cop that shot D.J........well I guess my opinion of what he should be charged with is a given....1st degree murder all the way....no doubt about it.
D.J. dies a hero...saving the life of another person...the fact that that cop didn't mean to kill D.J. does NOT matter to me...he was going to kill someone. Anyone....I think he really didn't care who. I pray daily that Stacie and the kids will be ok....my family is here for her and she knows that.    All my love too you D.J. I will miss you!
