Off-Duty Deputy Involved in Windjammer Restaurant Shooting

Memphis, TN - An off-duty Shelby County Sheriff's deputy was involved in the shooting of two men at an East Memphis restaurant.

Eyewitness News Everywhere has confirmed that the off-duty deputy involved in the shooting at Wind Jammer Restaurant & Lounge, is Chris Jones, the son of former Memphis City Councilman E.C. Jones.

The shooting happened just before 1:00 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2008 at the restaurant located at 786 East Brookhaven Circle.

Investigators say the shooting started as an argument, but would not say why the men were arguing.   A 42 year-old man was killed when he was shot in the upper body. The other man, who is 22, is in critical condition.

The owner of the restaurant says she was behind the bar running a credit card when her daughter-in-law yelled out that there was a gun.  The owner says she did not actually witness the shooting, but she heard gunshots and then people started screaming and running.

Memphis Police and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department are jointly handling the case, and are still interviewing as many as 10 witnesses.

Investigators are not saying what the off-duty deputy's involvement was in this shooting. The restaurant owner says the man who was doing the shooting remained on the scene and identified himself as a deputy when police arrived.

No charges have been filed.

What do you think? It's your turn to Speak Up! Memphis.

This is a real tragedy. The man who died in this crime was a wonderful person and a great friend to many. I hope that justice is not blinded by the fact that this cold blooded killer is not only an officer who apparently thinks himself to be above the law, but is also the son of a retired Shelby County official. Donald "DJ" Munsey, was someone's son, too. He was an innocent bystander who was trying to protect other innocent people from harm. He will be missed. Rest in peace DJ. We love you.

Chris Jones should have been taken off the force thirteen years ago when he injured my son. I knew he would some day kill some one innocent. I hope the Judge this time will not be like the Judge thirteen years ago and justice will be served and no strings pulled. My prayers go out to Mr Munsey's family and the other person's family who is still in critical condition.

Certainly you've heard of gang retaliation?? We'll you've got police retaliation as well! It's like being in their own little gang. Their are SOME out there that think they are above the law, the badge they wear does not represent the laws they are sworn to enforce & protect but (in their eyes) permits them to be above those laws. Two examples that stand out off the top of my head are David Tate & Brady Valentine. Let's take another example of how just recently the Pancake Shop on Summer how it was often visited by LEO's & now how the owner has lost those customers all because of one officer's actions. Here's a story on a personal level about how I got pulled over for bad tags once. When I declined to give the officer my ss# he attempted to arrest me for it, only to find out later he was in the wrong, but he got my ss# simply b/c I've never been to jail & I knew the ripple effect it would have if I didn't comply. The right thing would have been to report the SCSO but everything has a price & besides there are more of them than there are of me working 3 shifts 24/7.

My prayers go out to DJ, Stacy and the rest of their family as well as everyone else who witnessed this horrible crime. I knew both of them as a regular patron and close neighbor to the Windjammer in the mid and late 1990s and everybody was as fond of DJ and Stacy then as they are now.

Chris Jones if you are reading this, I hope you realize that your carelessness, hot headed behavior and violation of your responsibility as an officer of the law resulted in the loss of a beloved friend to Windjammer customers, a beloved partner and a father and the injury of a fellow patron. Whatever punishment is given to you by the legal authorities, the worst will be having to live with yourself after doing what you did.

To all friends, family and loved one's of those who not only cared but loved DJ,

This since less crime will not go unpunished.  Crooked lawyers and lenient judges cannot hide the fact we will face judgment to our maker the day we take our last breath.  "DJ" was shot like a dog and died a hero.  "DJ" will be remembered in death because of the love he not only demonstrated on a regular basis but that fact that he always had a smile on his face.  He demonstrated to those who knew him that even though life had been tough for he and his family, he held his pride and self-respect as though he didn't have a care in the world and held his head high.

It's not the amount of time we have on this earth, it's what we do with it that matters.  My friend "DJ" was shot and killed because he was a peacemaker.  I was not there that night, my several of "DJ" friends were.  They were witnesses to the horrific event that lead to the tragic death of someone we admired and loved.

I had the privilege to kneel and pray in the very spot where he took his last breath. His soul is at rest and he will only for the rest of us that he cared about to "come home".

To my friend "DJ", you are not dead.  You are merely waiting.  I will see you again as well as your young children that have been left behind and your beautiful girlfriend Stacey.

To Mr. Jones...

I pray for your soul.  You took our friend away.  You not only ruined lives ... you made those who loved "DJ" come together and remember him the way he DESERVES to be remembered.  I hope hope in your cell, when you can't sleep because can't turn off the images of gunshots and my friend gasping for air... that you fall on your knees and beg God as well as "DJ" for your forgiveness.

I hope I meet you someday Chris.  I hope you can look me in the eye and you can explain to me, a man of God, what is means to be a coward and murder.

Jail cannot hold your fate.  Death does.

To Stacy, lexi, devin, all of DJ's family...

This is absolutely crazy. That this P.O.S. deputy cop, who obviously is one of the biggest losers in this town, would have his gun on him at the bar and shoot my good friend over a parking spot. I called DJ a few hours before he was killed and told him I was coming to the jammer to see him. DJ your wonderful soul is all around us now. We will miss you forever. I'm glad we played darts last monday (with Charlie). Its so difficult to try and figure out this situation and comprehend it. I will pray for you and your family during chapel when i go down to the Union Mission to serve food. You will always be in our hearts FOREVER.   Love you Mike Lovejoy

No special treatment should be given Jones. He shot and killed a human being
in the heat of anger. He's a disgrace to our Sherriff's department and deserves
everything the law can throw at him. Everybody loses because some cowboy
had to pull his weapon like in the old days of the west. Hang him high like they
did back then. He gives a new definition to "cop killer".

The best thing to ensure that Jones doesn't get off is that all supporting witnesses, family and friends of DJ stay together and ensure that what happened stays in the public mind and is not forgotten. When this happens, the whole case is forgotten and the local political establishment will take advantage of this and get Jones off scot free. After all, he has strong connections with the DA's office, Shelby Co. Sherriff's department and his father is a former member of the City Council. Posts on the Internet by those who knew and loved DJ are an important part of this. If there is even a remote chance that Jones may get off, someone should rally further support among the public and put lots of emotion into it. What DJ's father said in his interview with Ch 3 sets the stage for this and everything he said was 100% right.

There are already signs of sympathy for Jones in the news media and those of us who knew and loved DJ need to respond to each of these. The possibility that he may get off with no punishment at all is real and has happened in Shelby County in the past. We must do all we can to make sure that this never happens!!

married - you're obviously the one with the 'race' problem. Everyone on the blog site has an opinion and they are posting on facts! Are there more murders commited by blacks and involve blacks? Yes! If facts and statistics bother you, maybe you should find something else to do other than read the news and read blogs.

As for your comment about those who post on the blogs 'not having a life'!?!? You're posting so you must be comparing the lives of others to your own abundance of 'free time'. That's not a good comparison because most of us have very  busy lives but, we also care about the news and can deal with facts.

Hey everybody!

The question of race has no place in this discussion as both Jones, the two victims, and practically everyone else involved (except for the TV journalists and possibly the arresting officers) are white. Questions concerning racial injustice are better discussed in blogs dealing with that subject or in blogs dealing with offenses where the victim and criminal are of different races.

Married, maybe you would be more comfortable on a bobby ojay blog where everything is whitey's fault. I'm from a black community so I know that there are a lot of good black people in Memphis. However, the crimes that we are mostly talking about are done by blacks, sadly. You seem to be one of the good ones out there. Thank you for standing with us. We just want people to take responsibilty and stop making excuses.

married - I am a well known "cop hater" here because of my alluding to the MPD officers behavior could have got him killed.  I didn't elaborate until it came out that he was a "swinger" because I thought it unnecessary.  I also alluded to the fact that the department is full of corruption and he could have been a witness (he obviously had a cushy posting).

When his lifestyle came out people stopped hammering me.  He evidently was a decent guy and good cop. RIP

To all of DJ and Stacies family and friends.  I live in Paducah, KY.  I know one of their best friends, i say one because i'm sure they had many.  I met DJ and Stacie when i came to Memphis with their friend.  We went straight to their home where we stayed.  These people did not know me from Adam, They open their home up to me and made me feel welcomed.  While i wasd there i met a neighbor of theirs who told me a story about a cold winter night when DJ and Stacie had just got off work on the wee of the morning hours, when they passed her home they seen that her front porch was on fire.  DJ and Stacie knowing that her mother was on oxygen feard that their home would explode.  DJ and Stacie pulled the car over and did not hesitate to get the familyawake and out safely.  So the Wind Jammer was not the first time DJ saved someones life.  These poeple seemed to be decent people that didnt have much, but would share or go out of their way to do anything for anyone no matter what the cost was or would be.  I believe DJ would not want everyone to dwell on the tragic event  that took his life, but to keep his spirit alive, for his legacy will be kept alive through his children.  As for Chris Jones, his fate lies in the hands of our lord.
God Bless, DJ and Stacies family and children.

Jones's day in court is next week and I hope as many of us who are friends and family of DJ as possible will be there. Jones intends to do everything to get out of serving any timel-his hiring of Leslie Balin as his attorney is testimony to that. We cannot allow this to happen and anyone who witnessed what went on that terrible night and what happened to Mr. Brunson earlier should be willing to step forth and testify and see that justice is done.
