MEMPHIS, TN – During a city council meeting Monday afternoon, March
18, 2008, Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton announced plans to close five
city libraries and four community centers effective July 1st. He says
the closings will save the city $1.5 to $2 million each year.
Here are the libraries affected:
- Cossitt Library on South Front
- Gaston Library on South Third
- Highland branch on South Highland
- Levi branch on Highway 61
- Poplar-White Station branch on Poplar
Here are the four community centers Herenton is talking about closing:
- Bethel-LaBelle on LaRose
- Greenlaw on Mill
- Hamilton on East Person
- Simon/Boyd-Magnolia on Wabash
Mayor
Herenton says money for the five libraries and four community centers
has already been cut from his proposed budget. But when he presents
that budget to city council next month, council members could vote to
put the money back in, and keep the libraries and community centers
open.
The cuts are based on recommendations from an efficiency study conducted last year, according to Mayor Herenton.
