Fire Kills Two Children in Joiner, Arkansas

JOINER, AR - Fire officials are investigating a fire that killed two Joiner, Arkansas boys and destroyed their home on Monday, March 24, 2008.

Firefighters were still on the scene of the fire Tuesday morning, trying to figure out the cause. The home was a small, brick duplex and both units were destroyed.

Eyewitness News Everywhere spoke with the boys' grandfather, who identified the kids as 7 year-old DaShawn Young and 2 year-old Eric Johnson. The brothers and their mother, Crystal Young, were asleep inside their home when their fire began. Crystal Young is at the Med, recovering in the hospital's burn center; she says she woke up because she could feel the heat, then saw the fire. She says she tried to get to the boys' room, but the flames in the hallway were too intense. She says she ran out of the house and tried to break a window, and as she tried to climb through, she cut herself badly.  She says she could hear her son, Eric, calling out to her for help. Neighbors say they could see Young trying to rescue her sons, but the fire was spreading too quickly.

A volunteer firefighter who lives in the neighborhood says by the time fire crews arrived on the scene, there was little hope of saving the children. He said he has been a firefighter for 21 years, but nothing could prepare him for grief he is feeling at this time.

The boys' grandfather told Eyewitness News Everywhere that his daughter was preparing to move out of that home because of several issues. He said she has had problems with faulty outlets, windows not being up to code, electrical and wiring problems, plus more. The landlord, Kevin Love, who is also the Mayor of Joiner, denied any problems with the home and said he was never notified of any issues. He said he was only told about a few problems in the nine months Young has lived in the home, such as problems with the thermostat and a leaky roof. He said he made those repairs, but was never told about any major safety issues.

Crystal Young is a student at the University of Memphis, getting a degree in pharmacy. Eyewitness News Everywhere will be speaking to Crystal Young's family. You can see what they have to say on Eyewitness News Everywhere at 5:00 on Tuesday, March 25, 2008.

I was so sadden when i read this. I can only sympathize with their mother who is recovering at the Med. I too have two preciuos boys of the same age and i can't imagine life without them. Crystal i am so sorry for your lost. This has really touched me. Please let me know if there is anything i can do for you and your family. I know how hard it is to raise small children, while trying to work, go to school and still be a positive force in your children's lives. Please call me.

I think she should have invested a couple of dollars in a fire/carbon monoxide detector.  I give them to people when I find they are idiotic enough not to have them in their house.  There are too many ways a house can catch on fire not to have one.

I think the landlord should know if the home is safe to live in (via a home inspection) before leasing it?  If there was faulting wiring, it should have been fixed by the landlord not the tenant.  At least these children had a mother who was there with them. She did what she could to try and save her children. Too many parents aren't even near by when something happens.  I know hearing her  child call out for help was unbearable.  I pray she will recover from her physical wounds quickly but I know the emotional wounds will be with her forever.

Amen - it is utterly horrible - I can't imagine it.

A house in perfect condition can catch on fire.  Smoke detectors are too cheap.  I think they will even give you one at the firestation.

I was in a friend house and looked up at the hallway ceiling and there was no detector - I gave him one.

you're right East Memphis, a smoke detector is cheap, but when the windows are painted shut and the wiring is bad, a detector does little. Also, i think you are being to harsh. This woman was doing all she could. It's hard trying to raise children, go to school and work at the same time. I feel that Crystal was doing the best she could with what she has. My heart goes out to her. You called her an idiot...now was that necessary? It;s not like she left them alone, or was drunk or not functioning. She was there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

States do not check on section 8 homes as they should and she had no way of telling if the wiring was bad just by walking through.

I hope they thoroughly investigate the cause of fire. If someone deliberately ignored faulty wiring, they should be held accountable. Renters are only responsible for the contents; the owner of this home is responsible for the structure.

I feel for this lady as much as anybody but given the condition she reported the apartment in - not having a working smoke detector is like throwing a loaded pistol in the crib with your baby. Same difference - except far more children die from fires than TRUE gun accidents.

Shadyslady if you don't have a smoke detector you are an idiot. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. It is not one of those hindsight things - it is predictable.  And I feel extreme sympathy for this lady - I can't imagine what she is going through.

I have lived in Midtown apartments with knob and tube wiring that were firetraps.  I shucked out the 9 dollars for a detector and I had no kids at the time. The landlord was a fire chief and should have had them in there but you know what - in the end it was my responsibility.

I would have been unable to sleep at night in a NEW HOUSE in perfect condition without a detector with kids.  If I was living in a section 8 house - first I bet it is REQUIRED of the landlord.  Second I bet if there was one it was disconnected with a dead battery. I would make sure I had a detector.

If you don't check your own smoke detector - don't cry when the possible happens.  If there was a working smoke detector in that house she probably would have got her kids out unless the floor was covered in gasoline.  The state can make laws but people have to put batteries in them.

Call me callous - I almost cried thinking about what she went through - but I think it was probably preventable.

like it was stated, with the conditions the house was in, a smoke detector would have done little so who cares what YOU would have done, its what happened that matters!

Most wiring fires are not from installed wiring unless someone drove a nail through it hanging a picture or the house has aluminum wires.  They pretty much stay like they are unless a squirrel is chewing on them.  They are from overload extension cords or the old penny under the fuse trick (That is a real bright one - like throwing a 30 amp breaker on a number 12 circuit so you can run the microwave, toaster oven and the coffee maker off the one 20 amp #12 kitchen circuit in some older houses)

Now if you have one of these in your house GET IT OUT

http://www.inspect-ny.com/fpe/fpepanel.htm

It is not to be trusted. There is one other panel but the failure rate of these breakers and panels is ridiculous.

It would have woken her up long before the fire was roaring.  I hope you have a smoke detector.

This is very upsetting to me as a mother of three girls, and  living in a section 8 home. It is the law here in our state for all homes to have a smoke detector and fire alarms that are working before the home can pass for a family to live in it. If your mayor has done this , there is no way that this family should have been living there. I hope that this will really be looked into because this women did everything that she knew to and the mayor should be held accountable for what has happened. If it is his fault and it looks that way this is murder and there is NO other way to put it SORRY for be so blunt about it but it is  just that , and he should be arrested for it. MY Heart  and Prayers go out to this family Because she needs all the prayery and support that she can get right now and in the furture!  GOD BLESS THIS FAMILY

East Memphis---As always, I trust what you say. I agree with your assesment.(sp?) I think that too many of these renters just take the word of the owners. If you have problems, then move out and report these people and get your money back. I really do feel sorry for the what this mother has lost. I can't imagine what she is going through. However, the first house my wife and child and I moved into, I bought an alarm to notify us of everything that might happen. I hate to hear of a loss of a child. I just cant think of what a good alarm would have done. Please, people, install a good alarm system in your house. It will mean the difference between the loss of life.

And when it starts beeping because the battery is low - go get a new battery THEN - It is incredibly easy to forget to put one back in for months.  You just don't think about your smoke detector.  Ask a firefighter how many times they see a smoke detector that doesn't have a battery.

Oh and if your outlets won't properly hold a cord in - replace them.  A plug hanging half way out of an outlet can lead to a sparking/melting situation that can result in a fire.  And don't replace a 2 prong outlet with a 3 prong unless you are sure it is a grounded circuit or you are putting in a GFCI outlet.

Well I'm not from Memphis, I'm from Minnesota. My name is Schreka, and Crystal and I are best friends. I appreciate everyone who is giving there condolences as for everyone else what you have to say is pretty much not welcomed.  I understand how everyone feels when they say that there could of been things to prevent this problem but being on the inside and not the outside looking in we see things a little diffrently. Like she said there were plenty of problems with this home. I visited plenty of times and saw for my own eyes, but when you have to kids and little money you pretty much have to take what you can get. As everyone knows the house wasn't up to par and that's why she was moving in a month or so, so she could have a better life for her and her kids.

Stating what she could of done and what you would of done really isn't anything that she, myself nor her family wants to hear. She did all she could to get the kids out of the home, she replays that moment in her mind over and over. She already feels that it's her fault because as a mom she couldn't protect her kids like a mother is suppose. If we could turn back the hands of time I'm pretty sure she would do things allot differently but since that's not possible she will continue to live as she is with the memory of her kids. She's a strong woman and she WILL get through this, it will take some time but she will!
