Draft Report on Alleged Blackmail Plot given to Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A special prosecutor investigating an alleged blackmail plot targeting Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton has sent the mayor a draft report of his findings.

Herenton claimed last year that powerful businessmen tried to frame him in a sex sting.

Former cocktail waitress Gwendolyn Smith alleges that businessmen offered her money in an unconsummated plot to lure Herenton into a videotaped sexual encounter.

Former Williamson County District Attorney Joe Baugh, accompanied by two agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, met with Herenton for about two hours last week. Baugh declined comment to the The Daily News.

Herenton was re-elected to his fifth consecutive four-year term in January, though he said last week he plans to resign if he can become superintendent of city schools.

I believe that Dr Herenton has always been a polarizing figure for the city of  Memphis, we must remember that he was the first Africa-American elected Mayor of Memphis, so in that he has made history, before Herenton was Mayor Hackett who's primary base of support was Memphis conservative white voters, during the election of  1991 there was a lot of racial animosities that mark that Mayoral race that still exist today. When he became Mayor of Memphis whites began to move out of Memphis into the near by suburbs in to Shelby County and Mississippi, Since that time, the proportion of blacks Voters has continued to increase, Memphis as I remember has always been racially sensitive city it is mark by,as some local business men put it;(What has separated successful cities like Charlotte and Nashville from Memphis ,he said ,has been the ability of the civic, political and business communities to come together, quote. The thing is as that busness leader put it "We have a great city and we need to move forward," CHANGE MEMPHIS YES WE CAN."

This was either good politics on Willie's part or what was going on at those parties was way past tapping a topless dancer.  Everyone in the city knows Willie hits everything with a skirt that works for him. It is a job requirement.  If Willie was doing damage control - I wonder when the real story will come out - if ever.
