Minneapolis Woman May Need Rabies Shots after Biting Pit Bull to Save Her Dog

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A Minneapolis woman says she didn't plan on biting a rampaging pit bull, but "that's what happened."

Amy Rice was trying to save her own dog, after a pit bull jumped a fence into her yard and began attacking her Labrador. Rice was afraid her dog was being killed, and she fought to pry the pit bull's jaws away. When that didn't work, she started biting the attacker on the nose.

Rice says she ended up with "pit bull blood" in her mouth. But her own dog is now recovering, with some staples and stitches to her head and a crushed ear canal.

The pit bull has been quarantined, pending rabies tests. Rice's doctor will determine whether she'll have to undergo rabies shots.

Trying to bite the dogs nose would not have crossed my mind. I would have looked for a shovel or something heavy to try and beat the dog off.   The article does not explain if the owners of the dog that attacked will be fined.

From personal experience a garden hose running full blast shoved in the dog's mouth works.

Failing that or a bullet in the chest obviously would change the terriers attitude.

I think they need to test her, she might have given the Pit Bull rabies.
Anyway, way to go. I'd have gotten a knife, personally.
Kudos to the rabid chick!!!

This was a very strange way to save her dog. But I applaud her willingness to do it. I would risk harm to save any one of my "babies."

I commend her willingness to refrain from VIOLENCE to end this fight, as well. Sheesh people.

While the only dogs I like to bite come in a bun with mustard and relish, I would do whatever I had to do to save my dog's life!

Human bites are more 'toxic' than animal bites.  They cause much more chance of infection--nasty infections.  I doubt that lady had rabies.  But her bite could make that pit sick.  Still I'd do it if it would get it off my dog.
My son had a pit bull.  She was the sweetest baby you ever saw.  He had raised her from a weanling.  Someone broke into his yard and killed his dog.  Totally senseless.  So please know that my supporting the woman that bit the pit doesn't mean I don't like the breed.  She was protecting what was hers.  I'd do the same.
I did CPR successfully on a dog, too.  When we kept animals for the Humane Society, we had bunches of dogs.  One up and died in front of me.  I did CPR and it lived.  And this was before I became a nurse....  He went on to live a long, happy life after he was adopted.

Hey Dover and Shadow? I think we have a new friend on here- Irishoaks is an animal rescue (lover) person. How cool is that?

Perhaps we could find a position in "our" government for such a worthy individual.

And, oh yeah. GO TIGERS!!!!!!!

Now the big question is this..if a dog was biting another human being, would you do something to save that person's life? Its funny how people put a higher value on a animals life than human life. I mean you can love your pet but what about loving your neighbor too?? But that my OPINION.

I don't get the impression from this story that anyone mentioned putting a higher value on an animal's life than on a human's life.  However, there are many people, myself included, who feel that they have a responsibility to care for their pet the best they can.

I don't know you Shanalana, but you appear to be East Memphis' new buddy.

I am a huge fan of pets. (I didn't want to say pet lover for fear of PETA and what they might translate that as.) I think that if a person is getting their ear or something else gnawed on by another person, they can either get them off or just sit back and enjoy it. Who knows what people like? Also, as far as if people don't value other people, my dogs have been more loyal to me than most people. I would like to think I would help someone, but I know I would help my dogs. They have never been anything but true friends.

Thanks, mnshadow, glad to be here--though there are many who would like for me to hush now and again.  Was that Sec Health and Human Services?  Sure-I used to be a Director of Nurses--did a great job at that--all my surveys were good, except one--a dresser drawer was missing a drawer pull...no joke.  Then there was the year I was sabotaged and many of my entries were changed.  I did find the forgeries a few years later when I went back to work at that place.  Got vindicated, too.  No real pleasure in that, other than I knew that I had done correctly.  Some people are really stinkers--jealous, greedy, corrupt--in all walks of life.
And yes, I would bite the nose of a pit to get it off a person, too.  I value human life more than animal life.  Dogs give unconditional love, cats could care less-you are theirs to disdain at will.  Hamsters amuse, snakes just slither, fish mesmerise, bunnies are soft and can multiply under the right circumstances, birds need many newspapers...but all can be good companions in one way or another.
However the touch of another human being is like unto a healing balm when done gently.  In the hospital, sick folks respond to calm touch-their blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate can lower and ease; pain levels can reduce; sleep can be more restful; healing can resume.  Children respond to hugs, sitting on laps while reading, fun toustling of hair on top of the heads, gentle caresses of the faces, holding hands.  Adults enjoy pats on the backs, arms around the shoulder, hugs, firm handshakes.  Add genuine smiles to these touches and glows of sunshine could be no brighter or warmer.
Love and respect for one another go far.  And we never know when we have met an angel unawares.
