TN- Today, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released its annual
“Crime in Tennessee 2007” report for the seventh consecutive year. The
Crime Statistics Unit uses the numbers submitted by Tennessee law
enforcement agencies to the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System
(TIBRS) to compile the statistics used for the comprehensive data
issued in the report.
The 2007 report shows a very slight
increase in the number of crimes reported from the previous calendar
year. The number of drug violations grew, as did shoplifting.
Despite the increase, for the second year in a row, the number of murders is down across the state.
Highlights at a Glance:
• 632,540 offenses were reported for 2007 (624,151 reported in 2006)
• 60.3% were crimes against property (61.4% in 2006)
• 12.2% were crimes against society, including drug offenses (11.6% in 2006)
• 27.5% were crimes against people (27.0% in 2006)
• Domestic violence offenses made up 48% of crimes against people (47.8% in 2006)
• Juveniles made up 10.4% of total arrests (13.5% in 2006)
