Puppy Beaten, Stabbed and Left for Dead in North Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN - Eyewitness News Everywhere has uncovered a disturbing case of animal abuse in Memphis. A 4 month-old shepherd mix was found barely alive, inside a plastic bag, in a North Memphis driveway with a steak knife sticking out of its back Tuesday, April 22, 2008. The puppy's face had also been spray-painted with red paint. The puppy is still alive, but in critical condition at a local veterinarian's office.

Investigators do not have any suspects in this case of animal abuse, but say they believe the attack may be gang-related because of the red spray-paint on the dog's face.

Two young girls found the puppy and called 911 when they realized the dog had been stabbed.

"He was just laying there... he wasn't moving, he was suffering," said Mercedes Kimbrough, one of the girls who found the dog.

Animal cruelty investigator Calvin Walker says he does not know who hurt the dog, but says gang members do pretty cruel things to animals in Shelby County.

"Sometimes they maim them, cut their leg or tail off, suffocate them," Walker said.

The x-ray image taken of the puppy's wounds show how deep the knife was plunged into the dog. The blade is about four inches long and only its handle could be seen sticking out of the puppy's back. The puppy underwent surgery on Wednesday and many are praying he pulls through.

"If he makes it out, he's a miracle puppy," Walker said.

Investigators say the puppy was a stray, after they went door to door and no claimed ownership. The dog was not wearing any ID tags when it was found.

Investigators say animal abuse it not uncommon in the Mid-South. They say they have seen dogs stabbed before, and witnesses even worse injuries.

"Kids will do that. They think it's funny to set a cat or dog on fire," said Walker.

Psychologists say animal abusers could become more violent, which is why investigators are taking this case very seriously.

"It can lead to domestic violence, murder, the gang violence... we need to pay attention to that," said Ginger Morgan of the Memphis Humane Society.

Animal abuse is considered a felony in the state of Tennessee. If convicted of animal abuse, a person can face up to nine months in jail. In Arkansas, animal abuse is a Class A misdemeanor. If found guilty, a judge could take the animal away from its owner. In Mississippi, animal abuse is also a misdemeanor and the abuser could be sent to counseling.

Sick and cruel......I agree with CatGirl.  This just makes me sick.  Anyone who would abuse an innocent, defenseless animal or child is savage!  Humans are the only animals who torture and kill for fun.  The "lower" animals only kill to survive.

that is just sick. whoever did this should be treated just as badly as the little puppy. i can't believe someone would do something like this. i'm pretty sure that the dog has feelings. who could do a heartless cruel thing like this? i believe that they did it because they are spineless little kids. they should get everything they deserve. i hope the puppy pulls through.

It was absolutely ridiculous for someone to do that puppy like that. That is evil and downright trifling. I hope they catch the person or people who did this and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. I sure hope that puppy don't die. Someone knows what happened to that puppy and they should notify the police even if they have to do it lo key.

I honestly feel what this person did to this adorable puppy is inexcusable. They derserve to know what it feels like to be beatin and stabbed. I hate the way some people are---cold-hearted serpents. I don't like the fact that a poor puppy that hasn't even started to grow or live its life is going through so much pain. And I am hoping and praying that God will save this puppy's life, and GOD, have mercy on that serpent's soul.

i think that anyone that loves animals would hope that this crazy person or persons will be caught. that is a horrible thing to do to anyone or anything. this seems like an act from the devil himself, not a human being. i am praying for the pup, and everyone needs to pray for this persons soul  to be saved !!!

I always say, there are three things that certain people should never be allowed to have, Kids, dogs, and horns, because they abuse all three.
People that do that stuff to innocent animals/humans should be publicly beaten and then humiliated. Oh, and then they should be killed, but only after the pain of the beating and humiliation has set in.

I hope they find the people who did this cruel  thing to this little puppy.
It's too bad that they  don't receive the same treatment that this poor
little puppy did. You have to a depraved human being  with no conscience
to do such a cruel thing. Makes you wonder what kind of people our society
is producing nowadays. There are some sick psychos on the loose in this city
and I hope they're prosecuted  when they are found.

I first want to say that my thoughts and prayers are with this puppy.  When I saw the pictures of this poor, helpless puppy; my heart sank.  At that moment my 10 year old daughter happen to come in the room and saw the pictures.  She began to cry.  We are very big animal lovers, and to see such hatred, and obviously no care for life; it's appalling.  The sad thing is that this type of animal cruelty happens quite a bit.  This one happen to get noticed.  I'm very greatful that the people who came upon this puppy did the humane thing and got help.  My daughter wants to know how we can keep up with the status on the well being of this puppy.  I hope the news will update the public on this issue.  Also, if the puppy does pull through this horrible ordeal, will it be put up for adoption?  Our family is very much interested in taking this puppy into our home, and giving it the love and attention it truly needs.  Any information on this would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

Tatboo35- thank you for reminding me to pray, not only for the puppy, but for the soul(s) of the person/people who did this. In my anger, I did forget that. It will be hard, but I'll try.

And, no, I'm not being sarcastic.

As a member of The Animal Right Movement and The Humane Society, I was sickened by this story!  I will never understand what people are thinking while they are torturing these poor innocent animals. It takes a cold, cold heart to do this. Most serial killers start out by abusing animals and move on to bigger prey.

I pray that this beautiful dog pulls through this. I sincerely pray that anyone that knows the sick person/persons that did this will come forward and name names, if you don't they will continue to do this. Please do the right thing and turn them in......for the sake of any future animals that are in danger, please!!

What kind of nation do we live in that thinks this is simply okay because they are just animals..........God help you.

The puppy probably walked right up to them, wanting affection and was almost killed instead.  This attack was evil and vicious.  I will never understand "people" who think they have to prove how big or important they are by abusing those who are smaller and/or weaker than themselves, or those who do it "just for fun", or because they're bored, or as an initiation.  I believe God meant for us to take care of His creatures and I also believe that there's going to be a special place in hell for the abuser(s).  I pray this special puppy makes it.

East Memphis trust me the anger would stem if it was a human. The out rage comes from people that love Gods creatures large and small. And a puppy doesnt have a voice to speak so humans take them up under thier wiings and become the voice for that animal. If I saw who did this I would probably do the same to them as they have done to the dog. But look at it this way whoever did this is a coward and can only harm a defenseless puppy because they dont have GONADS to mess with some one as big or bigger then them so they are loser's of the earth and trust me there is a place under HE!! 4 that type. They need to bring the Animal police here like they have in New York.

Naynay in these end times many value an animals life more than a child's.  It is sad but true.  As far as the animal rights agenda - they would have us all vegans and there would be no hunting.

I can't understand the mentality that hurts an animal like this but the whole animal rights thing plays on emotion, and in the end, will devalue human rights.

And believe me - they wouldn't have wanted me to see them doing this.  I most probably would have behaved irrationally and gone overboard.  Dogs (especially puppys) are true loyalty and love.

I do not see how a person could feel "okay" with themselves on what they did to this puppy.  Personally, a dog is as much human as a human being.  If a person can do this to a puppy, I would hate to imagine what they could do around actual people.

They need to look for the kids who did this every waking moment of there day becuz if they don't there will be more cases like this and then they will decide to go after a person maybe a child...

This little pup is the victim and justice needs to be fast and swift to the deranged people who place no value on a innocent life such as this puppy..

This really sets me off at the lack of concern by the cruelty investigator.I bet if he was someone he loved that was attacked like this he would not stop tell he found the person/persons who did it!!!!

We don't know that it was a kid.............it could have very well have been an adult....ya know.  Right?

disturbed adults are just as capable of an act like this.

just google [adults and animal abuse]

no disrespect intended..........but you can't blame all animal abuse cases on kids---not all kids are BAD.

First of all, the scriptures tell us that we should pray for one another.  Second, those of us who are believers have an obligation to pray for those who either don't know how to pray, or don't believe in prayer or God.  Third, if we ask God for something, our prayers will be answered.  In Matthew there is a quote: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

We don't always get the answer we ask for, but we ALWAYS get an answer.  Personally, I would rather pray for an evil person to be healed and turn his or her life around, than to take a chance on not praying for that.  Miracles happen!

And yes, to answer your question, that person does deserve to pay for his or her sins.  We all do, and we all will.....if not in this life, then certainly in the next one.

Thank you, Shadow! You answered that question much better than I could...

I'll tell you- this morning I did pray for the two dogs that have been in the news (see Bruiser's story http://commercialappeal-web.com/pets/2008/04/23/fight-bruiser-fight/)  and I had to really force myself to pray for the people who committed these horrible acts. I want them to pay for what they did, but I also want God to touch their hearts and heal them so they never do this again... I have to believe that it can happen.

East Memphis to use the phrase "high spirited youngsters" is beyond comprehension for such a heinous act - while the perpetrators may have been "high" there was no spirit to this at all. Anyone who would and could commit such torture on any living creature that feels pain and suffers is someone who holds a potential threat to all society. When next they turn their activities to a helpless human such as a child, an elderly person or one who has a special need will you then also call it "high spirited". Speaking as one of "those vegans and AR activists" that you so disparagingly put down, I can tell you that we are not the only ones who deplore this act and cry out for justice. Suffering, pain and terror are not limited to human feelings and intentional cruelty, for whatever the reason, never stops with the lesser of us but unless stopped will eventually end up being turned on us.

I cannot express the anger and shock I am feeling after reading about this poor little innocent puppy.  What is this world coming to?  I am involved in rescue, and unfortunately we see and hear horrible stories like this one everyday.  The suspects should be hunted down and serve the maximum sentence as well as do community service.  There is a bigger problem here and society needs to deal with it.  Gang related incidents should not be taken lightly.  In my opinion, those responsible for this horrible act should feel some of the pain they inflicted.  Laws across the country should be should be stricter and enforced.
