Memphis City Pools Closed Following Drowning of Two Teens

MEMPHIS, TN – The City of Memphis has closed all public pools following the drowning of two teenagers over the weekend.

The two drowned in separate incidents on Saturday, May 31, 2008.

The first incident happened shortly after noon at the Pine Hill Community Center in South Memphis.  A 14 year-old boy was the drowning victim in that case.  One of his classmates, Porsha Holmes, said she got a phone call about her friend.

“Somebody called me and said it was some boys up here taking a bet by jumping in the pool, so he had jumped in the pool.  I guess he had drowned after that,” said Holmes.

The second incident happened at the around 3:00 p.m., Saturday, at the Westwood Community Center pool, in Westwood.  A Memphis Fire Department spokesperson says a 15 year-old boy was sent to the hospital in critical condition after lifeguards tried to revive the teen.  In both cases the teens were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospitals, according to police.

Detric Stigall, administrator for Memphis Parks Services, said at least five licensed lifeguards were on duty at the time of the drownings.

There is no word on when the pools will reopen.

This really gets me.....following is an article from Channel 3 website that the parents of one of the children who drowned is suing the city.  While I believe this is tragic that their son is gone, I can't imagine that they KNOW they have reason to sue already.  By their own admission, the dead child cannot swim.  They didn't know where he was.  He was told not to leave home, but disobeyed and went to the pool anyway.  If there were adequate life guards on duty, and someone dove in right after the kid and landed on him, how can the city be blamed for that?  (If that's what happened)  I don't blame them for wanting answers, but to immediately file a lawsuit????  It sounds like someone greedy trying to capitalize on their tragedy to make a little money!  Here is the story:

Family members of a 15-year-old who drowned over the weekend in a public pool say they plan to sue the city over what happened.  Demavius Bailey is one of two teens who drowned Saturday in city operated pools.

Saturday afternoon, 13-year-old Cameron Hogg drowned while swimming in a pool at the Pine Hill in South Memphis.

An hour later 15-year old Demavius Bailey was pulled from the pool at the Westwood Community Center and could not be resuscitated. His younger brother was also there, but didn't see what happened.

"Everyone was just telling me my brother was laying on the ground," said Dazarrius Harris.

Bailey's mother and stepfather had no idea the brothers had gone to the pool Saturday.

They say they never would have let them go on their own since they didn't know how to swim and didn't even know the pool had opened for the summer.

"It hurts, because he was suppose to be at home, and I told him not to go anywhere and now he is gone," said Willie Miles.

"I'm just trying to cope with it.  Keep busy, but I'm not doing good at all," Betty Miles.

Witnesses told police Bailey jumped into the deep end of the pool and  may have been hit by a swimmer who jumped in behind him, but his parents say they still don't know exactly what happened or how many life guards were on duty.

They say they plan to file suit against the City and won't rest until they get the answers they're looking for.

"I want to find out what happened to my son and where were the lifeguards," said Betty Miles.

Family members of the 13-year-old who drowned Saturday at the Pine Hill Community Center were too upset to talk today.

Neighbors say Cameron Hogg was a strong swimmer, and they can't believe he's gone.

"The whole neighborhood is sad, because he was a nice young man,"  said James Bryson.

Both teens will be laid to rest on Saturday.

Don't you remember DeAuntae Farrow case? In that one, the mother and the absent father were fighting over the lawsuit money before it even went to court. The best part is, the dad wasn't in the kids life. All people think about when something bad happens is that they can sue. Its just expected, I guess.
