Memphis Man Carjacked While Trying to Sell Car

MEMPHIS, TN - A Memphis Man lost his car and nearly lost his life while trying to sell his car.  Police say he was carjacked while going for a test drive with a man he thought was a potential buyer.  Right now, Memphis Police are on the lookout for the car, and the crook.

Selling a car isn't always easy.  Derron Pollard's 1993 Park Avenue has been on the market less than a week.  "At least 15 to 20 people have test driven this car."  Which may not sound like a bad thing, but 15 to 20 potential buyers means 15 to 20 opportunities for a carjacking.  Pollard tells us that’s why he always is in a nearby "parking lot and I try to get them to drive around this lot in case something happens."

Less than a mile away from where Pollard is selling his car, Ramiro Guerrero was carjacked while trying to sell his car.  Guerrero and his potential buyer went for a test drive when the potential buyer pulled a gun and kicked him out of the car.

Dealership General Manager Ken Myers can relate.  "It's happened to us a year ago, and we've been looking out taking precautions."  Precautions that may have saved lives at his East Memphis Dealership.  "We're all very aware of what's going on around us.  The first thing we do is get a copy of the driver’s license and that'll usually stop it.  If they don't give a license, they're not driving."

Individual sellers like Pollard and Guerrero may not have access to copying machines, but there are still steps you can take when selling your car.   Police Detectives say you should get as much information as possible about the would be buyer before going for a test drive.   This includes name, address and phone number.  You should also have the person show proof to verify his or her identity.  Test drive in a place where there are several witnesses, and do not test drive a potential buyer alone.

Right now Memphis Police are on the lookout for a 1995, black Ford Thunderbird.  Tennessee License Plate - 792 NLH.

Guerrero tells us the accused carjacker is an Asian man between 20 and 35 years-old.  He's between 5'5 and 5'8 with several tattoos on his body including a dragon on his neck and a cross on one of his forearms.
