MT. PLEASANT, Tenn. (AP) - An argument between two Mt. Pleasant commissioners ended in a fist fight during a budget meeting, but no charges were filed.
The Daily Herald in Columbia reported the argument between Bob Shackelford and Steve Kirk during Wednesday's meeting started over the authority of the city manager.
A reporter covering the meeting wrote that Shackelford told Kirk he was done arguing, but Kirk said he wanted to continue discussing the issue. Shackelford then stood up, struck Kirk several times in the head and dragged him to the floor where he continued to hit him.
City Manager Richard Goode ran to the fighting officials and separated them, then put Shackelford in a headlock. Police officers responded and took statements, but Police Chief Tom Wilson said Kirk declined to press charges.
Shackelford apologized to Kirk and said what he had done was wrong. Kirk declined to comment.
