Memphis, TN -- More accused drug dealers in Memphis are behind bars as of June 26, 2008, thanks to a secret operation put into action in the early morning hours.
The Memphis Organized Crime Unit had a long list of 50 people wanted for felony drug charges.
Their goal was to go find and arrest as many as they could.
While Eyewitness News Everywhere was riding along for the sting, police arrested two guys accused of dealing drugs. One of the most alarming situation they found during their operation was two young children home alone overnight.
They found the young children alone when they knocked on a door looking for a drug dealer.
“We came over here on a pick up and we have a six year-old and a four year-old at the house alone,” said one of the Police Sergeants.
When the mother of the children finally arrived at the house, we asked her what would have happened if someone other than police would have knocked on the door. She responded that it would have been devastating.
“I’m not saying what I did was right. I’m not trying to justify it in any kind of way because I know it was wrong,” said the children’s mother.
The single mother says she knows the accused drug dealer the police were looking for, but didn’t know where he was. But the more important question, why did she leave her kids alone?
Police say she told them that she's working a couple of jobs and stayed up late last night.
“They usually have somewhere to go. They usually go to my sister’s house at night and it just happened that I left them here,” said the single mother.
She ended up telling Eyewitness News Everywhere that this wasn’t the first time she’s left them alone.
Police say the kids were left alone from 1:00 a.m. until the police got to the house at 5:00 a.m.
Their mother says, “I love my kids. They are everything that I’m working for.”
The Department of Human Services visited the house of the young children to question their mother.
Even though it was an early start for police, they say it was worth their success helping out these kids and taking quite a few drug dealers in Memphis to jail.
