MEMPHIS, TN – Police say an elderly woman was shot in the head during a fight her son was having with his ex-wife.
According to investigators, police were called to a gas station in the 2600 block of Hollywood, around 4:30 a.m., Saturday, July 5, 2008, where they found 69 year-old Katie Powell in a van with a gunshot wound to the head. Police say the shooting happened in the 1600 block of Oakwood in North Memphis.
Detectives say the victim drove her son, 36 year-old Kevin Powell, to a house in North Memphis where he had a fight with his ex-wife. Police say Kevin Powell broke a bedroom window before forcing his way into the home through the front door. Police say that is when another man, 32 year-old Maurice Jack who was inside the house, grabbed a rifle and started shooting. Police say Jack continued to fire the rifle as Powell and his mother were driving away, striking 69 year-old Katie Powell in the head.
Katie Powell was taken to the Med, where she remains in extremely critical condition.
Investigators say Maurice Jack has been charged with Criminal Attempted Second Degree Murder, Employment of a Firearm, and two counts of Aggravated Assault. Powell’s son, 36 year-old Kevin Powell, has been charged with Aggravated Burglary and Domestic Assault.
