MEMPHIS, TN – Police say a 5 year-old Memphis boy shot his 6 year-old sister in the hand.
It happened at the Goodwill Village Apartments at 2540 Peres, Tuesday afternoon, July 8, 2008.
Police say the mother and a third child was in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but were not hurt. Investigators say the shooting happened in the living room of the apartment and they are trying to find out how the 5 year-old got the gun.
Witnesses on the scene told Eyewitness News Everywhere that they heard two gunshots. James Henderson who lives at the complex said he heard, “the lady upstairs saying, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’ The baby was shot. I thought it was just firecrackers.”
Lt. Steven Ware with the Memphis Police Department says he hopes parents who own guns will learn from this incident. “We got to put these guns away. We got to keep our kids safe, protect our kids. We got to lock these guns up,” said Ware.
The 6 year-old girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in non-critical condition. She is expected to be okay.
