Police: Man shot over cigarette in Jackson, Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Jackson police have arrested a 36 yeaer-old man suspected of shooting another man in the back because he refused to give him a cigarette.

Police have booked Anthony Bailey in the shooting. Police have not confirmed the identity of the victim.

The shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon.

Jimmie King, owner of the shop that specializes in repairing and selling used tires, said a friend of his, whom King knows only as "Buck," was helping out at the shop. King says a man walking up the street asked his friend for a cigarette. King says the man and his friend exchanged words and the man got mad.

King says a few minutes later he watched the man shoot his friend in the back then attempt to shoot him again, but the gun would not fire a second time.

The wounded man was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment.

Police say Bailey as arrested along with evidence linking him to the shooting.
