Speak Up! Memphis

Bartlett: Striptease Exercise Classes not Allowed

BARTLETT, TN - A local exercise studio planning to offer striptease exercise and stripper poles won't open, because code enforcement says it’s an adult business.

Eccentric Studio planned to open in July and offer "Strip to Fit” classes. The exercise class uses stripper poles and strip tease dancing techniques.

But the city of Bartlett did not approve of the dirty dancing and issued a stop work order on the business. That means studio owner, Rachael Vint can't finish building her studio and open.

Vint says she is not violating any city ordinance and that her business is not a sexually oriented business.  According to Vint, no men are allowed and women remain clothed at all times. Vint says the "strip to fit" class is a great workout.

Striptease exercises classes are held all over the country and are growing in popularity.  In many parts of the country, you can go to classes or even buy at home exercise videotapes to learn how to “Strip to Fit”.

Vint has been holding classes at exercise studios in the Memphis area for the last three years. She says demand for the class was so high, she decided to open a studio on her own.

Vint says Bartlett Mayor, Keith MacDonald, called her this morning and told her, he considered the facility an adult business, and that it would take a court order for her to be able to open for business.

Eyewitness News Everywhere tried to contact McDonald, but he has not returned our phone calls.

Come on mayor you can't be serious. Let me see if i got this straight.  REAL STRIP CLUBS can stay open and who knows what goes on in those places but Vint seems to have an establishment that is drug free, doesn't require bouncers, serves no alcoholic beverages, and doesn't offer any means for there to be prostituion, alows women to feel great about themselves and you want to close her down.  You are taking away a woman's  way of living because she offers an opportunity that gives many woman ways to be free and congregate without any men around a little female bonding.  Mayor let me ask you how many strip clubs are open in or near your town?

Typical Mid-South move to shut something down without getting all the information.  Open your eyes Mr. Mayor.  You had the opportunity to put Barlett on the map as being as innovative as New York, California, Chicago, Texas...open minded...understand that a Pole Studio is empowering to women.  Behind every good man is a good woman....and a woman that has self-esteem and pride is what you would get with this dance studio.  Go Read The S FACTOR newsletters and maybe you can get an idea as to how strong this movement is.  Well, the Memphis movement will now actually be in MEMPHIS.  Go Ms. Vint....I'll be in your studio where ever you put it!   I won't be in  Bartlett spending my hard earned dollar ever!  Can't wait to see a lot of networking, self-empowering women having a good time very soon.

No one has yet mentioned whether these classes are meant for 'mixed' pupils (male & female)? And the owner is right in pointing out that you'd probably see people with less clothes in Downtown Memphis or any local Park or area Mall.
Why not just enforce a 'dress code' like they have for the 'legal' Strip Bars? And obviously, there is no liquior served at the propossed gym is there?

I support the mayor and his decision.  Finally a politician with backbone!
Maybe the mayor and citizens of Bartlett do not want to be "innovative" like New York, California, Texas and Chicago.  Look at the mess those states are in.  Who wants it?  If you want their form of innovation move.
One of the qualities of Bartlett is that it trys to maintain its small town image.  If you want this type of business take it somewhere else.  Just because the are strip clubs in Memphis does not mean they need to be in Bartlett.
Lastly my wife does not  have any self esteem problems and she does not need to strip to be or stay fit.
I will continue to spend my money in Bartlett and support Mayor MacDonald for having the guts to make the right decision for his city and its citizens.

Hey mcdonb15... there is nothing wrong with her business. No men are allowed in the studio. It is only women!! It's not a studio to turn women into future strippers. This class is for woman who want to get a fun, little work out. I know there are husbands out there that are all for their wives getting out of the house and doing something good for themselves... and I'm sure they wouldn't complain if she decided to show him what she learned in the work out class that day either. I've been to a few of Rachels classes, I was nervous at first, but then I realized everyone there is there to get a work out that isn't boring like running on a treadmill. My girlfriends and I had a fun time together and no one there seemed to be judging anyone. This place does nothing but impower women and boost their self-esteem. The mayor needs to lighten up!!

First off, Chicago is a CITY in the state of Illinois.  Secondly, there are a lot of other things going on in the wholesome city of yours called Bartlett than a lady trying to conduct a legal business.
And I would put some money down saying that your glorified Mayor has been to a few rippers in his day and his just acting like a hypocrate to make himself look good.

As wrong as it may be, I agree with everyone. Good for the mayor standing up for something. Too bad little willie doesn't stand for anything. I wonder if MacDonald would be interested in the Memphis position? That would be a great way to get the cities to come together. I think he would be good for the position. And speaking of positions, who cares about this place doing this? She not training them to be strippers. Plus, maybe it would cut down on the people going to strip clubs if the wives were doing it at home. Maybe divorces would go down. If people don't want strip clubs, then teach people how to do all this at home. It would be the first time the unemployment rate dropped and people were happy. They'd never leave the house.
