New Information: Puppy Tied Up and Left to Die, Chews Off Paw

It is believed that 10 week-old "Spunky" chewed off her own paw to get free from a rat trap. MEMPHIS, TN – An eight week-old puppy that was tied up and left to die in Frayser, chewed off her own paw to break free.

Richard Arendale says he stopped by his rental property to find that the tenants had gone.  He says he found a pile of junk on the curb and a puppy tied to a wooden post, with an extension cord around her legs.  Arendale says the cord was wrapped around so tightly that the puppy had to chew her paw to break free.

“When I turned her loose, she drank like she hadn’t had anything to drink in weeks,” said Arendale.

Arendale told Eyewitness News Everywhere, in addition to the injured puppy, he found a dog’s jawbone in the driveway.  And when he went inside the house he found ***, urine, food stains, garbage, and five crack pipes.

Arendale says on one occasion, he went to check on the house and noticed two dog carcasses in the back yard.  When Arendale asked the renters about the dead dogs, they said the animals were not theirs.

According to Arendale, the couple even had children living with them.  He says the couple owed $4,000 in back rent.

An animal rescue worker named the puppy Spunky, because when she was taken to the Vet’s office, she was barking and wanting to play.

Veterinarian Tracy Gullett says Spunky’s leg was so badly injured, it had to be amputated.  But Gullett says Spunky should be just fine getting around on three legs.

Gullett says it is hard to understand why someone would leave an animal like Spunky to die.

“Be responsible for you animals.  Don’t expect somebody to take responsibility for your mistakes,” said Gullett.  She went on to say, “They’re gonna get theirs in the end.  When you treat animals like that, it’s a reflection on who you are.”

My name is Stephanie. First of all, I just wanted to say that I am a loyal fan of your 9'oclock news. I enjoy the enthusiasm of the team. I don't have a comment about any of the news you have posted but I do want to comment about something that I feel will cause a great deal of "news" in this area. I am a 25 year old black female living in Dyersburg, TN. I grew up and graduated in 2001 from Obion County, home of the Rebels. As a senior, I had another senior tell me that he had never touched a black person before because his father told him it would rub off. I let him touch my hand. I graduated with less than 10 other black people. It was very difficult. I have to take the bypass to go to church every Sunday in Obion, TN, and passing by the Trimble, TN exit I looked over in the field and noticed an incredibly large rebel flag flying in the center of the field. I spoke to my parents about it and they said that some of the people of Trimble had questioned the mayor about it and he could do nothing. They didn't know if it was because it was on private property or for what reason. As I previously said, I am a loyal fan of your 9o'clock news and I know that your team investigates situations and gets to the bottom of things. I would like for this to be opened wide with at least an explanation in the year 2008. Thank you in advance for your time, help, and cooperation. My email address is pikantan@yahoo.com.

Ignorance can't be stopped. Just because there is a flag, doesn't mean they are out to kill black people or that they own slaves. Its a flag to them not a sign. People that live in those areas don't see any of that as offensive. Just like that flag someday will come down, well, so will ignorance and hate, if there is any. In Memphis, there is just as much, but its reversed here. Anyway, move on.
