Helena-West Helena, AR - Go home or go to jail! Those are the only two options for people living in one Mid-South neighborhood. The mayor of Helena-West Helena, Arkansas has issued a mandatory curfew. The curfew is in place for

re: Go home or go to jail! Even if the people vote for it, government intervention must follow the Constitution ( the supreme law of the land), if you want to have a police state, move to Russia. This makes the ultimate sacrifices that too many Americans have suffered to defend freedom moot! Arrest the criminals and leave the citizens alone. I say fight back for your rights, you have the second amendment in place for just such a situation where the government is intolerantly abusive, and restrictive of rights guaranteed every citizen of these once United States. If you look at it from a police perspective you have to understand that the law ties the hands of law enforcement officials in a big way and there is only so much can be done so working with a handicap such as that you cannot just sit back and let crime go and let everyone do whatever they want when they want. Police officers are hated and until the public changes their attitude toward police officers and joins with them in the fight against crime then this is a losing battle.

If you look at this situation from a parent perspective and you want your children brought up right and teach them right from wrong then parents should realize that this can keep their children out of a lot of trouble or becoming the victim of a crime themselves. You may not think your children do anything wrong but answer this question for me. if your child is out on the streets around midnight 1 night and gets shot and killed would you still be against the curfew?

As I said earlier in this comment until the hatred of law enforcement officials stops and there is a community wide team effort in every city in America to make changes then this is a losing battle.

re: Go home or go to jail! Rape every day! Multiple carjackings every day! Really I think people are mad because they are being forced to do it. Kids of course should have a curfew and we parents should be home with our children! I totally agree with what this man is trying to do. I live in Memphis and the crime is high....it's not uncommon to see an under age child out way past the "street light" rule I was raised on. We need to keep our children off the streets....keep them at home and get them into something recreational and positive but parents we have to have some structure in our lives too....we can't run wild in the streets....whose gonna raise the children left at home? I was raised with both of my parents in the home and as a widow I'm raising 3 children alone....so I've experienced both ends of the spectrum. I don't want to steer too far from the subject at hand. I'm not a fan of police for reasons not related to this topic and I say all of that to say this...in order for any change to occur we have to come together, work together, & pray together. :) So why is everybody having a cow about having to adhere to a curfew??? Those who are complaining are probably the same people who don't leave their home unless they have to. Give the man a chance to answer to your demands of fighting crime and making your streets safe!!! Like DeltaTechMan said: if your child is out on the streets around midnight 1 night and gets shot and killed would you still be against the curfew?

re: Go home or go to jail! If only we could do this in Memphis. we live in Frayser, and the crime here is unbelievable. there are THUGS walking around 24/7 who are dangerous to our community. My 11 year old daughter has witnessed drug deals, shootings, and is worried about just playing outside. There is no reason we should have to live like this!

re: Go home or go to jail! Let police officers do their job without infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens.
Too many times do I see Memphis police officers sitting clustered in convenience store parking lots. How is this effective policing? Should they not be out patrolling the streets preventing crimes? It seems to me they don't prevent crimes at all, but visit crime scenes after the fact.
When a drunk driver rear-ended me and then fled the scene on foot, he was able to come back in another vehicle to collect his property from the totaled vehicle before Memphis police bothered to show up. When they arrived I tried to give the officer a description and license number from the vehicle the felon fled in but he didn't want it, said, "your insurance will cover it." To this day (1 1/2 years later), I have not heard a word from the police dept. about this felony hit-and-run. I doubt that it was ever investigated.
