THE SCHOOL SYSTEM SHOULD SET THE EXAMPLE BY LETTING EVERYONE KNOW THAT YOUR CONSTITUTION RIGHTS IN THIS COUNTRY ARE SUPREME. NOT THE FEELINGS OF A FEW OFFENDED CRY BABIES. All hail the confererate flag! Ha ha The real issue is; Is it likely that the display will disrupt the school, and the answer is yes it would.

DeFoe says his great-great uncle served in the Confederate army and "died for the South" in the Civil War. I guess both he and Rebelhowery forgot that the South lost the war!

All this rebel and confederate yankee hating stuff is so old. Get over it. The "old south" is long dead and gone. Why are you "rebels" so hung up on the past? That's why the south will never "rise again". Look around and see the the south is mostly African American and Mexican American. The "rebels" are gone.

Where exactly does one draw the line on what's appropriate for kid's school attire? Do we allow naked women on t-shirts, photos of dismembered bodies, or profanity? Well of course we don't! Offensive attire does not belong in a school setting. The rebel flag certainly qualifies as inappropriate, just like a swastika, a penis, or the above mentioned. You cannot have it both ways. One must mix common sense along with freedom, or you end up compromising both. Furthermore, those of us old enough to have some historical perspective on this issue remember quite well the separate drinking fountains, segregated schools, restrooms that could not be entered by people of color, along with hotels, restaurants, public transportation etc. We are talking less than 40 years ago when these things still existed. These morbid social "rules" were perpetrated by those who thought the rebel flag was some sort of justification for all of those wrongs. In Memphis, one didn't have to look very far to see signs of blatant racism. My father's business on Willett Street still had seperate restrooms labeled "white" and "colored" when he first leased the building in 1969. The owner of the building had a small rebel flag tattooed on his forearm. Those who fought in the civil war are all dead. So many of those who were forced to endure the vengenance and racism of "confederate" policy are still alive today. In fact, the economic damage done to an entire race of people by "rebels" is still somewhat evident, even in this day and age. You can fool kids with your justification for the symbol of racism, but you cannot fool those of us old enough to remember what the phrase "The South is gonna rise again" really means!

The Civil War was fought over a 147 years ago it's like slavery give it a rest and put the flag away for good the North won the war,

and racial bigotry still lives on in those that live for hatred.

So if a flag is wrong to wear in school because it is offensive, why is it that kids can still wear their pants around their knees showing off whatever they want or girls wear clothes so tight people can see any little ripple they have? Because to many more people than those that find the rebel flag offensive, those actions are more offensive and more damaging.
I agree that in the past there was considerable damage done. However, in this day, THAT WE LIVE IN NOW, there is no excuse for anyone to not be able to succeed. I grew up in one of those areas that is poor, overlooked, and only produces more of the same, supposedly, and I didn't let anyone tell me what I couldn't do. There are more opportunities out there now than ever before and if someone doesn't succeed, its not because of some stupid belt buckle. If anyone is still held back by a piece of material or metal, then they don't deserve to succeed.
So, before anyone blames anyone or anything, first look to make sure you have done everything possible. Everyone is right. It is all over. The more people make an issue of things like this, the longer they will be an issue.

P.S. --Just as much as people have the right to wear their pants around their ankles and have ever bulge and ripple showing because "its a sub-culture", these rednecks have the same right. Being a redneck is just as much a "sub-culture" as being a thug. Plus, I haven't heard of any rednecks shooting up some neighborhood and killing children because of an argument over a girl or drugs. So far that little flag and its "sub-culture" has been a lot less dangerous to me and mine than the thug "sub-culture".

As someone said earlier, the Civil War ended a long time ago. The North won, Lincoln forgave the southerners for their misdeeds and helped keep America one great nation. Unfortunately, we still have a few misfits out there that are still engaged in a loosing conversation. America is one nation, one flag, one people..

This kind of ignorance really holds the south back and keeps it permanetely second rate. This is one of the reasons why the south (excluding Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Miami and Charlotte) has such a very poor image around the country and actually, around the world. Let's put the confederate flag in a box, lock it and move on to the 21st century.

For those that really want to hold on to the flag, do a google on Tom Wise (YouTube) and understand why the war was fought to begin..

Ok people, I don't get it, what's wrong with a kid fighting to save his rights to wear his heritage?
