anyone else notice that everytime a new percentage of precincts report in that herenton's lead gets a little larger by the same portion? seems like each precinct would be a little different causing the lead to fluctuate. not just go up all the time. is there any way to investigate if the election was rigged? this isnt a smart*** question. it is serious. anyone know?

Last month, City Councilman Brent Taylor hit the nail on the head. You might even call him a prophet. Councilwoman Carol Chumney, who at the time was running for mayor, refused to approve the minutes of the meeting that failed to pass the mayor's pay raise for the upcoming year. Taylor called her on the carpet for allowing the subject of the pay raise to resurface because of her action. He said that what would happen was that the subject of a pay raise would come back up for discussion and pass on October 16th and that Mayor Herenton would be enjoying a big raise in the new year. Humm.......

When the subject of the mayor's pay raise was first discussed, it was voted down by the council. At that point, most people thought it was a done deal. However, this is when a lot of Memphians got a lesson in how the council REALLY works. Even though a proposal fails or passes, the vote isn't binding until the next meeting when the minutes from the previous meeting are approved.

Chumney defended herself with a weak excuse that she wanted to bring another subject back up for discussion from that same meeting..... just like she defended herself when she refused to vote with the council to force Mayor Herenton to accept Joseph Lee's resignation.

It looks as if "the woman who would be mayor" had it all figured out how to secure a pay raise for herself after she was elected mayor. Chumney only proved yesterday what I had been saying throughout the mayoral race: she's just another ambitious politician who really only has her own best interests at heart rather than the general public. Carol Chumney is an ambitious political grandstander who thinks that she is a lot slicker than she really is. Well look who got slickered!

Chumney's really not as smart as she thinks, and she could not have been a good mayor. Having been a state representative, it was easy enough for her to make sure that she got a few pot holes or street lights fixed for her district. It was also easy enough to help get a few pieces of legislation passed in the house. But her legislative experience is not enough to qualify her to run as big a business as the city of Memphis; and furthermore, her personna and presentation lack the dignity and finesse needed to attract new business to the greater Memphis area.

Although the candidate that I would like to have seen as mayor did not win the race, I have this one small consolation prize: as of December 31, Carol Chumney is off the city council.

It has been an honor for the past 8 months to have been a part of a class-act political campaign. However, it was never my intent to become involved. What started out as me trying to send a couple of politically astute friends to the aid of an excellent candidate ended up getting myself involved instead--much to my own surprise. It was the education of a lifetime, and I am truly grateful for having had the opportunity to serve. Although my candidate did not win, he was brave enough to make a very bold statement with his campaign that until this year, no one had been able to address: UNITY.

Mayoral candidate Herman Morris did something that no one else has been able to do with a mayoral campaign. He brought together a vastly diverse staff of men, women, democrats, republicans, black, white, young, old, executives, the average citizen, and even some who were unemployed. It was a very unique and exciting experience which brought in the same vast support from the voters.

Mayor Herenton had the advantage of being the incumbent. Carol Chumney had the advantage of making her name known in the community as council woman for the past 3½ years. Herman Morris began this race in February as a man virtually unknown to the average citizen of Memphis and still managed to take home 21% of the total vote. Not bad for a beginner. It took the councilwoman 3 ½ years to bring home 12% more.

Was Morris the spoiler as Ms. Chumney has suggested? Hardly. Two weeks ago, there were a very large number of undecided votes. The Yacoubian poll pushed about half of the white undecideds to Chumney in a big effort to push her over Herenton. The Rasmussen poll pushed half of the black undecideds to put Herenton above Chumney. The prevailing outcome was what Rhodes Professor Marcus Pohlman referred to as "racial reflexivity." As the man in the middle, Herman got hit from both sides.

A win for Carol Chumney was a mathematical impossibility. If Herman had withdrawn himself as a candidate, she could not have gotten his entire vote as she assumes. If this race had been one-on-one between WW & CC, the black turn-out would have been much larger and the outcome would have been the same as it is today. Willie Herenton would still be mayor. Mathematically, Herman is the only candidate who could have beaten Willie if she had dropped out of the race. Very few, if any, of her voters would have voted for Willie. They would have gone to Morris and he would have won the election. If only Carol's ego would have let her realize that fact, we could have a new mayor today.

Morris may not have won the race, but he did win voter recognition. And so Memphis, Herman will be back to run another day. This isn't the end of the game; it's only half-time. You will see him again…stronger and louder, but still just as much of a class-act—with dignity, integrity, and the ability to get the job done. Thank you for all your support.

How is it the man who destroyed our school system on the school board is then given the "key to the city"??? last night i was watching news when they had some of memphis viewers ask carol some questions.one of the questions was from a mr.woods and he asked carol why she never came to a black neighborhood to campain, her response was ive went to whitehaven serveral times!! the news caster repeated the question thinking maybe she didnt under stand,again she repeated shes been to whitehaven.carol--DUH-- what about north memphis,frayser,north haven,etc.?? those are other black areas also??

Because he has done more for this city than any other Memphis Mayor. Carol may be close behind, but I doubt she puls it off. Morris just needs to drop out---- and I'm not concerned with whoever else is running. Carol and Morris complain about wanting to debate Willie--- but WHY? We already know what Willie can do, what he has accomplished.... Carol and Morris should have debated against each other instead of being concerned about ganging up on Willie about what they think he Ain't doing- and what they will do better.

Our great mayor has won again. This will be his fifth term in office. To all the haters "we shook you off." Herenton has done an excellent job for the last 16 years and I am very----------enough, enough,enough!!!! I'm about to puke.

I bet everyone thought I voted for Herenton. Absolutely not!! I voted for Carol Chumney. It really didn't matter to me who won this race as long as he did not. But, Unfortunately he did. Congratulations to the mayor, Our city will continue to weep FOUR MORE YEARS. I hate to say it, but it's true. I really thought the mayor's victory speech would've been a chance for him to step up and say that he would work with the the city as a whole. Once again Herenton shows his true colors with his childish rants stating that he didn't divide us so it's not up to him to work toward putting us back together. Well, if that's the case then citizens we should say the city is not in debt because of us or there are empty buildings, like the pyramid and the coliseum, just taking up space and demand a refund on our taxes-------sounds crazy doesn't it.

Another thing.. Was it just me or did anyone else see the mayor seeking sympathy when he had already won? He tells the story of how he was booed by a crowd that was 90% white when he presented Justin Timberlake with the key to the city. That was so pathetic. If people don't see through Herenton by now, something is seriously wrong in Memphis. Once again my black people have been blinded by King Willie.

one more term for the narciiscistcic mayor of memphis, unqualified as he may be and unequaled by his worthy contenders who are much more qualified to hold the office of mayor. i just want to do what many have done and get out of this city. i think mayor herrenton was out of the city for some time last year and no one knew quite where he was . my husband had an uncle who owned a drug store and he had a letterhead that read: rascality undoubatly expected.

How can people keep voting for the same man that is partially responsible for our corrupt government and fully responsible for our city's crime? He did nothing throughout this whole election there was no actual campaigning from him. Who is voting? The criminals? The politicians that are being paid to support specific companies? This man has been in office almost 16 years and in the past 16 years Memphis has gone down hill everything he says he will do during his campaign never gets done. He wonders why Memphis is becoming a slum, everyone moves away from the city because it's not even safe to walk out your front door to get your paper. You have to worry about all the criminals and no part of this is really the fault of the police, who he truly does nothing to help. He is just worried about sittin pretty in his chair in city hall for another four years..he doesn't really care about memphis.

Today is the day! It's Chumney or Herenton. Don't throw away your vote!!!

This is so typical of the people of Memphis, to vote for that man that has run this city into the ground and made it the worst city in America to live in along with the highest crime rate. No wonder so many people have gotten out and now will continue to get out. I moved my family out of his domain years ago and have seen a steady decline in the city over the last few years. Willie's day is coming, whether it's through paternity suits or getting caught taking kickbacks, his day is coming and he can join the long line of "distinguished" politicians to fall by the wayside in Memphis.

well Herenton has had a very nice run as mayor of Memphis, being the first black mayor has meant a lot to people in Memphis, but I do believe that a change must happen and Herenton had has his chance to make some changes, he has done some very nice things for Memphis but now let somone else try and do something different also, we all need some new leadership and this is the time for someone new.

Recent reporting about poll results have seemed to suggest that only Herenton and Chumney are in a dead heat. This erroneous reporting has prompted us to address the issue face-on so we may offer you the factual data shown in the polls.

Our polls and those of the media confirm one fact: Herman Morris is the only candidate with momentum. As reported Monday on Channel 5, pollster Berje Yacoubian stated: "Herman Morris is the only candidate in the top three to gain ground" in the recent polls.

The polls we have seen show that Herman Morris is in a statistical dead heat with Carol Chumney. In fact, our internal poll shows Herman with a slight lead over Chumney - but the numbers are statistically insignificant because of the margin for error.

The Yacoubian poll and our internal poll also show both candidates within striking distance of incumbent W.W. Herenton. However, only Herman has shown any significant movement in recent weeks - he is moving up even as Herenton and Chumney numbers are flat, which means they are losing ground.

Another poll showing him a very distant third with no way to catch up.

People know Carol Chumney has stood up for what is right and has a reputation for standing up for the middle class and everyday citizen.

Herman Morris has never held political office. He's a multi-millionaire who's only claim to fame is a few years at the head of MLGW. And even then there was Hurricane Elvis, and Networx. He can flood the city with signs, but people are torn between Chumney and Herenton.

Please Mr. Morris, every poll has shown you lagging behind in third place. Only one even showed you close to Chumney's support. The labor unions have backed Chumney, wiping out any chance that corporations and big business are skewing these polls in Chumney's favor.

Please do the right thing and get behind Carol Chumney. The city's future may depend on it.

Despite all the hype thrown around by the Herenton camp, the word we have is "godfather" Harold Sr. didn't show up and never intended to be part of the so-called rally.

Here's the truth, and what we should all tell our friends and acquaintances:

      · No one should waste a vote on Chumney. That just helps

So Harold Ford, Sr. did not show to the much anticipated Herenton Rally! No surprise there! The fallen through rally that Herenton and supporters promoted as being the be all, win all of the election is just another example of the HYPE that this election has promoted and circled around. This includes polls, events, rallies, e-mails, and Vote for the candidate best qualified to run the city, not just based on the HYPE surrounding each candidate and their chances to unseat WIllie. That is not what the election should be about!
