    Educated Decisions?

Oh where, oh where have all the rational people gone? Oh where, oh where can they be?

As time keeps on tickin' here is the bluff city, I find myself asking one question more and more. What were they thinking? This question has deemed itself even more relevant in light of the recent Memphis City Council's proposal for education budget cuts. "What were they thinking?" In this city of "Gotham," evermore overcast from its crime rate, education and Memphis City School should have been one of the last items considered for funding reduction. But of course, the dark side has once again wiggled its way into the minds of what would normally be called "rational people." The city counsel, composed it men and women who ave been intrusted to make well-educated decisions for the good of our community, have once again had what can only be called a "blonde moment" (no prejudice, as for I have blonde hair myself). Educated decision? Nope... not so much. Had the counsel researched the economic effects stemming from the funding of public education, both short and long-term, they would have seen that the funding cut they were signing was actually a promise of economic recession and of increased crime for our community. In fact. a simple google search would have provided simple facts about education and its results on the community, economics, and crime. For example, for every dollar spent on education, the government saves and additional 7 dollars in the future - information from a United States study. But alas, Goldie Locks has once again stumbled into the house of the 3 bears. What will Memphis City Schools do when their porridge is all eaten up? And as for Willie Herenton, or King Willie as most people call him, he has somehow found a positive outlook on this detrimental situation. He has seen the next opportunity to set out on his next great journey to claim control, authority, and power over everything and everyone here in the land of Oz. Yes, Sir Willie, this is a political issue. Make no mistake about that. And so, once again, I ask myself the same ole' question, "What were they thinking?"

Oh where, oh where have all the rational people gone? Oh where, oh where can they be?

    Re: Educated Decisions?

Like the Mayoral election in November 2007 (Willie) the people of Memphis will get what they ask for. You ask where are the rational people? They are moving to Germantown, Collierville, or Mississippi. I have only lived here now for three years and I am ready to go anywhere, just get out of this crime infested, dirty politcs, racially divided city. Good luck to those who have to stick around. My advise...buy a gun and lock your doors!

    Re: Educated Decisions?

Nearly a billion dollar budget for the lousy results we already get for that money proves that in Memphis, just throwing money at a problem won't make it work out.
Unfortunately, the words "good stewardship" don't mean anything in Memphis City Government when it comes to money.
Having two or three "desirable" schools in the system of over 100 schools is not success by a long shot, it's dismal abysmal failure of the lowest order.
